It's a sick day. Stop giving people grief over having anxiety.

Why is mental health such a taboo discussion in our society?

It's not a manner of being lazy or weak. We all handle stressors differently because we are human and not robots.

americans today work harder, longer, and get paid less for their work counting inflation than any other generation before and companies are making more money than before. That means the american worker is being fleeced.

So you can frick off, i'll take as many days as i can get away with.

Maybe the company should change their shitty PTO policies.

If they're a company that just gives PTO instead of a bunch of shitty qualifications like a doctor's note for an individual "sick day" or advanced notice for "personal days" or "vacation days" then you wouldn't have this problem.

Could they use their sick time for a mental health day?

Maybe you should take advantage of the the new policy because you sound like you need a mental health day.

So you've never taken a day off just for the frick of it?

Never to get caught up on some things you've been neglecting for while? Never taken a Friday just to have a relaxing 3 day weekend?

No, I'm going to tell my employer I'm a taking a "mental health day", but yeah, ill probably days some random days for the frick of it.

they should

as if I'm somehow bashing or frowning upon mental illness or mental health

the issue is that "mental health" day off now has the added bonus of not counting against the usual PTO or sick day, and it's open ended

take off work, I dont give a shite....but now, there is an expectation that if I drop the "I need a day because my mental health is in jeopardy" that it's (a) automatic, and (b) not docking your accepted sick days or PTO?

seems alot like bullshite

I'm not sure how you quantify "harder" but they're working longer.

At least when compared to the previous generation.

quote:

It turns out, Americans are logging more weeks of work a year now than they did in the past, according to research from the Labor Department.

In 1979, people were working for 1,687 hours a year. By 2013, that figure had jumped to an average of 1,836 hours a year, according to an analysis of government data by the Economic Policy Inistitute.

I've legitimately never heard of it not counting towards days or being "open ended". Hell, even FMLA isn't open ended.

Requiring a doctor's note for every time you take a sick day (I'm not talking 3-4 days in a row, just the occasional sick day) is such a shite arse policy.

I agree with you, but if my company has separate leave and your dumb arse tells me that your sick leave is a mental day, I'm going to require a doctor's note.

They're probably seeing their parents regretting working themselves to death over not near as much money as they thought they'd have in retirement.

My Dad worked 40+ years for the railroad and while the retirement is good retirement compared to other companies, physically he suffered for just taking the minimal week vacation in most years. He'll be the first to tell you that he regrets not taking more time off to spend with us when my brother was still alive. He missed a lot of time with us growing up because he worked so hard to provide.

This makes sense. My dad got really sick and had to retire and didn't live much longer after. After reading your post, I remember at times, wishing he was there for certain things. And looking back, of course it would have been good to have had more time with him. I think all of his hours would roll over so when he did take off, it was always the week between Christmas and NY. But thinking about it now, growing up, every day during the week I would only see him 15-30 mins in the morning then he would get home (I think), between 5:30-6PM. So within the 3 or so hrs a day I would see him, there wasn't that much "quality time". On the weekends he was doing the things he couldn't get done during the week and working on other things.

It's not that we didn't do things as a family.. But I guess it was limited. When I was old enough to go to school, my mom had a part-time job, but I think that was just for her to have something to do, but each parent had a different role. When I got in trouble, my dad would only hear about it if it was something really bad.. And when my mom would tell my dad, I knew I was in some serious shite..I am "thinking/typing" out loud, but yeah.. I understand what you are saying.
