it's not really my call
it's not really my direct employee, one that just sort of works around the office
it came up today in our dept meeting, ______ is taking off today for "mental health"
apparently, this will not count against sick, vacation or personal days based on what was discussed, because we all have to be sensitive to the plight of the recent college graduate in the big bad scary new world....

Who cares how a person chooses to use their PTO
I was going to quote this because I agree but

they dont think this is applicable to their PTO
this is an all new excused day off that doesnt ding their vacation days, nor their sick days, nor their PTO

Not sticking up for millenials but depression/anxiety can be just as debilitating as any physical illness.

It's management's fault. Getting drunk at lunch wasn't hurting anybody but y'all went all in on this "professionalism" bullshite.

Right but if you work an employer that offer's PTO which you can use for whatever you want, this shouldn't be a problem.
I do believe that employers should all just offer PTO and not segregate it by vacation, personal, sick, weather, etc..

now, I have to excuse someone for taking a "Mental Health day" ?
-not a personal day
-not a sick day

It's a sick day.
Good for you if you don't have any legitimate mental health issues, but some people do, and you have to fricking deal with it.

I personally wouldn't allow my employees to use sick time for this, but if they wanted to use personal I say go for it.
I say in this case you would have to adjust that, because the lady in question does have mental issues and was taking sick leave to sort through them. They were praising her for her honesty.

what companies offer this? I've never heard "taking a mental health day" outside of it being just someone using their PTO or sick time allotment.
However, if you can negotiate an extra form of PTO, shouldn't you be commended for that?

They have to segregate it because if you terminate an employee, you owe them for earned vacation. You do not owe them for unused sick days.

I don't see the problem. For years it was called an "I'm going fishing day" and now it has a more appropriate name.

Mental health day is just code for personal day. Ferris Bueller did it in 1985, this is hardly a millennial concept.
Correct. Lie like a adult damnit. Make an effort to not seem like child.

I'm not arguing the veracity or validity of mental health being a legit reason for taking time off work
I get it, no argument here
it's this implication that somehow "mental health day" transcends the otherwise accepted days off an employee can take as part of the traditional employment agreement. That's what I dont agree with.
it's like some sort of irrefutable blanket excuse for taking the day off of work, and everyone just has to be OK with it, and yet all the PTO/sick days are still in tact.

That's the whole point of why this went viral. She was honest with management about why she was using her sick leave and the CEO sent her an email directly commending her for her honesty and that she was more than welcome to use her leave for that reason.

This is so pussified vs. how boomers handled it:
"Going postal"

"Going postal"

If it really is for a health issue, it will be easy for her to present a doctor's note. Mental or physical.

Good point.
Then sick time should cover it. Mental health is just as big a deal as physical.

apparently mine? I dont know, this is a whole new thing to me, hence the thread

I guess, but this was just sort of presented as "I'm taking the day off for mental health " or something along those lines and there's no consequences
wasnt like this person negotiated anything, just announced it. "This is happening"

The viral lady will be able to produce it. Some people cough*OP*cough didn't read the entire story and going off on a story they have no idea what it really was about. The lady has an actual mental health problem.
