YouTube (Long video warning)
TLDR - It actually is the machines. But it seems to be intentional from the company that makes them.

Would you clean one for $5 an hour?

Are you familiar with the routine?

I would not. No doubt they are a PITA to clean, but if you actually watch the video you would know there is more to it than that.

The routine is the machine is clean and the $5/hour peon ain't dirtying the machine just to clean it again later
This is more common knowledge than whatever the video claims

Though I already know the answer, I ask for a shake anyway just to hear the classic “ da Machine broke” line.

You could have just said I'm too lazy to watch the video to educate myself and accomplished the same thing

I watched this yesterday. Video has like a million views in only two days or something like that.
To summarize the video. The machines are self cleaning. They heat up to kill all the bacteria, then cool off again. Process takes 4 hours. Machines don't always work when doing this process, and the error codes are really hard/next to impossible to understand so you have to call a technician to come and fix it when the machine fricks up. You can only call authorized technicians by your franchise contract, and the company is making lots of money off of this so it never fixes this problem. That is why the machines are always down. Company who manufactures machines and does all the work on them is Taylor.

Uhhh that would be considered illegal since the minimum wage is like $7.45 or something like that.
If it was a part time job and I was assigned to clean it, yes I would because I'm not a piece of shite employee.

Yup.
And the franchise owner is the one who foots the bill, not McDonald's. McDonald's has a very cozy relationship with this company. It's a very slimy deal.

To add to this
The broken ice cream machines are specific only to McDonald's. The machines that Taylor makes for Dairy Queen, Chick-fil-a, Wendy's, etc. don't have the same problems as McDonald's but Taylor makes a huge sum of money by continually "servicing" the broken machines and McDonald's just doesn't give a shite that customers are angry that they can't get ice cream.
There are more McDonald's than any other fast food restaurant, so Taylor is making absolute bank thanks to McDonald's, who have been partners with Taylor forever.
To summarize, McDonald's doesn't give a shite about their franchise owners or customers who want ice cream.

My daughter was telling me her theories on why the shake machines are broke.
She settled on the workers were lazy.
