The golden triangle area is home to some of the biggest chemical plants and refineries in the country. Motiva, BASF, Total, Valero, Cheniere LNG, Dow Chemical etc provide 10s of thousands of high paying jobs to the area. I have yet to run into a nice area.

There is also 0 culture to the area. Where do all the plant baws making 125k per year live?

At BASF, we don't make a lot of the products you buy, we make a lot of the products you buy better.

Most of those cities in the area didn't exist until oil was discovered. They are entirely blue collar. There's not much higher ed, and Houston attracts the white collar businesses, creating somewhat of a brain drain.

Lake Charles is better than Beaumont because it's a little farther from Houston, and has a slightly more diverse business climate. They also seem to have invested a little more into the city center than Beaumont or Port Arthur although the Beaumont metro area is a bit larger.

I was on a project in the Port Arthur area for a while. I absolutely hated the area.

The landscape isn’t helping. Flat and boring.

Who wants to live next to a chemical plant?

I would assume there’s a shitload of reliability engineers there making good money. It’s similar to LC in the education department and jobs, but LC is much nicer, IMO.

People that work at a chemical plant. I’d assume there’s a lot of good fishing and hunting in the area as well.

Didn't we just do this thread with the body worded almost the exact same way?

December 4th: Why is the Beaumont/Port Arthur/Orange, TX area so depressing?

Lake Charles and Beaumont (and the area around them) are probably going to grow with more industrial jobs over the next 20 years - especially if they can avoid any more direct hurricane impacts. They are blue collar towns, but the jobs are pretty lucrative and stable.

I'd take Baton Rouge over Beaumont, Port Arthur, or Orange in a heartbeat. Beaumont may have a bright future with industrial expansion, but right now it's the undisputed armpit of the gulf coast.
