Nuclear War would change the world and be much worse for everyone. Russia isn't looking to change the world, only their position in it.
If Putin escalates from here on a global scale I think we'll see cyber terrorism. It's a skill they have and they can do more damage to the West than we can do back to them in this manner.
Take something like Amazon Web Services down for a few weeks and you cripple a lot of businesses. Not to mention more than a few 3 letter government agencies use AWS.
