Ah. I misread your post. You mean Ugly Duckling syndrome. Yes, go find those. There are plenty of them. No need to settle on a fugly adult.

I agree with this to an extent. It depends on a number of factors and the will of the person in question.

I dont use premade recipes or any of that. Everything I make i make from scratch. My grandparents on both sides did that. My parents did that growing up and I do it now. There is no substitute for being able to walk into a kitchen and cook whatever you want by feeling. And it isnt easy. It takes knowledge and experience.

But i agree anyone can make Hamburger helper and cover it in salt then feed it to people.

And that knowledge and experience is typically gained through following recipes... whether it's from a book, online, or from your parents. Learning how to follow a recipe, and learning why it works, is just a building block to being a better cook.

Not everyone can be a creative chef.

With time and experience in cooking and understanding flavor profiles and texture, you can. It's like going from crawling to running a marathon though. First people need to familiarize themselves with a stove, and then turn it on. Learn how to cut veg, brown, reduce, etc. then they can take more steps, and over time and falling in love with food and cooking can then begin to build upon their skill set to become excellent in the kitchen.

I eat plenty of gulf seafood. I just don't mind eating a piece of tilapia for something cheap and quick during the week.

Not if it is farm raised in the US though. I am particular about looking at the labels on the seafood I purchase at HEB to check where it is coming from.

I agree. Then at some point you need to stop following recipes and just cook. It makes everything easier. You can open the fridge and figure out a meal from something. It's also not that hard to cook on Sunday and have enough food for 5 different dinners throughout the week.

People who say they go out to eat all the time because there isnt enough time to cook are lazy and ignorant. People who feed their kids food outside their home more than as a treat every once in a while are borderline criminal. Make cooking a fun family experience. Let the kids and the wife help. It brings the family closer together and teaches the kids valuable skills for their life.

Yep. Tilapia is a cheap trash fish. It's good for a quick, cheap, sorta healthy meal, but it's not fine dining. I'd take just about any fish over Tilapia most of the time, but I'll eat it if that's all I have access to.

My wife is a CPA and carries a full time job. On a typical weekeday she doesn't get home til around 6 PM. She doesn't have a ton of spare time to create her own recipes.

My wife is already here. I really don't think there's anything wrong with following recipes. It isn't like she's making hamburger helper and mac n cheese. Typically the stuff she makes is very nice.

They have a 9 day season now? I was surprised when I was offered a filet and immediately took it. There really is a huge difference between fresh fish and bagged tilapia from Sam's.

Some nutritionists have been touting a study that they implies that eating tilapia is worse than eating bacon.

Yes, bacon.

I guess this is another reason my wife likes recipes. Makes it easy to produce a grocery list, so we know what we are buying as opposed to just buying stuff and then using it or maybe not using it.

I agree. We both have full time jobs and we rarely eat out.

Agree 100%.

I think the underlined speaks to a larger issue. I hear how busy everyone is all the time yet I don't see many people doing much. In fact, life has become so easy I think our survival instincts are waning. It takes more time to go eat than it does to make dinner, yet this thought escapes many.

My mom had us helping in the kitchen as far back as I can remember.

My mother told me she couldn't cook till right before she got married. Her mother told her she had to learn to cook and gave her all sorts of help. By the time I can remember, her cooking was awesome.

I think in a society where men have to try and please the women so much it has put the cooking burden on men until the marriage. Even then, men have a part in cooking most things.

One thing that does sabotage are kid's diets are grandparents that give them candy and junk

I blame feminism and too many girls growing up spoiled brats. Women think they are above cooking most times, when realistically its a useful, practical, financially responsible, and fun task. Its the same thing as most women frowning upon being a stay at home mom. I salute women who really are stay at home moms, because you cannot put a price tag on nurturing/raising your children daily and taking care of the home front. Its almost become a cultural norm that stay at home moms are lazy and undriven individuals which is pathetic to say for such a noble job.
