Why is it seemingly so hard to get a meth head put in prison?

I thought of this after the comment in the baby left in the mountains thread about the effect that meth addicts are having on rural, white communities.

I know of some locals who go to jail over and over and over for possession, cooking, and burglary. They always seem to be right back out, no matter what the charge, and they continue right on with the same behavior, without fail. Those in law enforcement, law, or other fields that deal with these people, why is it so hard to put them in prison?

Are you suggesting life in prison for drug use? Seems a bit harsh to me.

Because warehousing nonviolent offenders is too expensive and not practical with the jail and prison system we currently have.

Where did I say life? This isn't just some people who smoke a little weed or do some recreational coke. It's a lifestyle, and it affects the entire community that they live in with the associated crime that goes with the lifestyle.

This is why drugs need to be legal. Treat drug use and addiction as a public health issue, not a crime. That way addicts won't have to pile up actual crimes on top of the real problem they need to fix.

Because Louisiana is in the middle ground of "harsh on drugs" and "treat drugs a a health/rehabilitative issue and not crime." We're going with shorter sentences, but it doesn't really matter because they turn right back around and show up for a new charge AND probation violations the second go around.

We need to do as Texas, when we have the funds, and invest HEAVILY in actual rehabilitation (for drug cases, which I'll guess are the plurality of crimes in Louisiana). That should reduce long-term crime, which eventually saves money on the prison system and recidivism alike.

Also, your local law enforcement may be ticky-tacky going after small-time drug USERS and not actual DEALERS. It looks good to make arrests for their re-elections but doesn't actually stymie the problem of drug dealing, and it sticks users with addiction in jail, which does them no good other than a detox until they get out and get back on the stuff.

The druugie revolving door system is necessary to keep law enforcement, judges, lawyers, probation officers, clerical, etc, etc, on the taxpayers payroll. It's an economy unto itself.

Why?

Because people bitch that felons are being incarcerated for "just drugs."

In the last year alone, changes made by the State legislature have made "good time" for drug offenders at 25%. Meaning, if you get a 10 year sentence for heroin, you only do 2.5 years. They also gutted the probation and parole system so that now a person can only be on probation for a 3 year maximum, and that three years you get day-for-day credit, so you really only do 18 months of probation.

They'd still rob people to get cash to afford their next fix though
