Why is burping taboo in some households?

It doesn’t stink, and it doesn’t create any other negative impacts other than the unpleasant sound. Seems kind of silly that social pressures have made it taboo and frowned upon.

Burping without covering your mouth or trying to subdue the burp is taboo. It's the same if you sneeze and cough all over the place or even yawn loudly.
It's nasty and rude in classrooms, public, and households where manners are taught.
