Anchorage is an ugly urban center in the middle of a bad climate area. If I were truly going to live in Alaska I would head to one of the smaller towns. Plus, it helps a lot if you’re an outdoorsy type. It’s beautiful up there, but not for everyone. Seasonal affective disorder is real.

I’ve read that many dangerous people and criminal types flee to Alaska because it’s so remote and they can hide out.

Agreed

Actually quite nice compared to others parts of Alaska. It's moderated by being coastal so the winter temps aren't really as cold as interior locations or even western/northern locations. Also helps keep them not as hot.

Smaller towns ON the road system are good. I don't recommend moving off road system unless you are ready for that kind of lifestyle.

Wrong! Booze is cheaper there than in Louisiana and state taxes are zilch. I've never encountered violent crime in Anchorage or surrounding towns. The scenery is gorgeous even in winter.

How do they manage the winters? The average temperature doesn't get above 27 degrees from November through March.

people dont understand cold very well.

first off, it's way easier to adjust to cold.

second, its generally not the "wet" cold that you get in the south. South after a cold front is colder than the typical winter day in Anchorage.

mid 20s and dry is damn nice with a pair of lightly insulated pants and a medium jacket. hell that's shorts weather for me.

however when it is cold up there it's mainly the wind that will make it brutal. generally, Anchorage is protected from strong winds in the winter time...unless there is a chinook wind which actually warms things up.

Drugs, primarily meth and heroin. Ending "catch and release" helped a little. Lots of ex military, oil field baws, Hawaiians, South Sudanese fish processing, natives expelled from their villages. Its the last stop for some of them.

A shite load of money, lots of strippers, dealer, typical night people. Its a fun place if you want to party.
But there are places you have to avoid, 4th st, Russian Jack, and near the base. Parts of midtown.

I worked there, refused to live there. Commuted an hour and a half each way. Its the end of the line for exiles from villages and towns who cannot behave.

Yeah, it not polar like many believe. I think the last winter there I played golf in Palmer in January one day.

I go to Anchorage 2-3 times a year for work for a few days. Last two times, drunk natives have tried to fight me for no reason other than them being hammered on a smooth Tuesday afternoon. Just keep your head down and keep walking.

Many of those are ones who were kicked out of the village and given plane fare to Anchorage.

Last time I was there on business at the Captain Cook, I saw a black dude pull a gun on a native guy over a hooker. That's downtown Anchorage. Building that bus terminal made things much worse.

Coastal towns blow anything in the East part of the US away. People are awesome. Except Dutch Harbor and Ketchikan.
