Pilot light would be out if the gas was cut off.

Some water heaters have an "economy", "Idle", or "vacation" setting so the heater doesn't keep reheating the same tank of water while you're in the Caribbean for a month. Should be a red knob or switch by the thermostat (temperature dial). But someone would have had to adjusted it, so probably not.
If your thermocouple was screwed up, your pilot probably wouldn't stay lit, so I don't think it's that.
It sounds to me like you might need to call a plumber or your handiest local friend/neighbor.

Mpemba Effect - hot water freezes faster than cold water. No, it's not a joke...google it. Happened to me earlier this week. Just had to wait for it to warm up a bit and the hot water came back.

Vapor lock.’
The line to your water heater froze, then you ran the water drawing water out when no water was going in.
So your level switch is now giving a false reading now that the lines are thawed.
You may have to access your water heater and pull a plug to equalize the pressure and reset the switch.

Is your cold water pressure down too? That's from everybody in town dripping their faucets. (assuming you're on a municipal system and not a well. If you're on a well, I have no answer as to why your water pressure is lower.)
