The water appears to be fine, I think it's more so due it's past history of being polluted.

Because they don't want to step on any syringes...

All shitting aside, except for the Seabrook area, the southshore of the lake is usually cleaner than the northshore because of the run off.

We use to water ski and swim in the lake all the time back in the 70's and 80's and never got sick. Once they figured out shell dredging was destroying the lake, and it was banned, the lake is much cleaner today.

I had a cousin a long time ago that drowned in it. He was caught in a whirlpool.

As kids, my cousins and I used to swim all of the time in the Pontchartrain channel my grandparents live on in Slidell. Nothing too bad except for the occasional crab pinch. I know there were sightings of a garfish but we didn't really care too much.

After Katrina we didn't touch that water. Haven't since.

People drown a lot, the water is brown, and there is no real easy access for swimming without a boat.

Better question would be why people don’t swim more in Bayou St John now that it’s open to the lake.

People do.

What do you expect, the 1920's when people went down to the lakefront in their seersucker suits?

I swam in all the time. My uncle had a camp in little woods in the 80s. Another uncle got one next to the seafood restaurant near the twin span in the late 90s. Went there all the time to jet ski and whatever until Katrina.

I did in the 90s. I turned out ok. Too bad the house didn’t make it through Katrina.

Lake Pontchartrain became a boogieman at one point. Growing up, I was told to never swim on the Lakefront because its too easy to get sucked under the concrete steps there and drown. I don't know if its even possible to get under those steps, but I'm not swimming there.

My buddy's uncle broke his neck diving into the lake. That's why he never would swim there.

My dads brother drowned when he was 6 years old back in the 30s. Apparently it happened semi regularly back then.

I dated a Speed Queen, for a week.

The sex was really good but regular life with her was killing me.

Napoleon would have approved of the relationship.
