Civil service. Dude I knew had two drug arrests and was caught stealing mail and still not fired.

TL;DR - OP is an idiot who can't fill out address information properly and blames USPS for his own idiocy.
Sounds about right.

You had one job. And it was the easiest part of the entire operation. Write the correct address. And you fricked it up.

This was because the zip code was off by 1 digit, a typo.

Like most all government entities….no accountability. They get paid the same regardless the quality of service. They don’t go out of business. They won’t be fired.

USPS isn’t the reason you screwed up your ZIP code.

They knew it was you and were messing with you?
I do think the USPS (along with many folks) will be in the crapper pretty soon as the older folks who know what they are doing start to retire. Seriously, folks in my local P.O. are at least 50 and not getting any younger. As they are replaced, the under 30 folks can't find a squirrel with a nut.

Your situation sucks, but I am pretty amazed at what they do on a daily basis.

I've never heard a package going back for the wrong zip code unless it was the first number.
A zip code tells exactly where the package is going. The first number is the region. We are in 7.
The next two numbers are the area the last two are the specific post office.
Generally before being sent back or going to dead mail. They will look up the street address and pull the correct zip from there.
If your zip is 70808 and someone sends it to 70008. Your package will go to metairie first, not Baton Rouge based on zip.
For even better service the +4 to the area code gives the specific mail route in addition to the location.

Waited for a package for 2 weeks (came from overseas), finally got to my local facility and it sat there for 2 days before I got a notification this morning that it was being sent back to the sender. This was because the zip code was off by 1 digit, a typo.
Went to try to pick it off after work and the fricker was already gone. Oh, and there’s no way to intercept it either.
1. Why the frick can’t they take 10 seconds to verify the address in whatever system they use?
2. Even if it was so wrong that it couldn’t be verified, why cant they contact the person and at least give them a day to pick it up before sending back?
3. How many packages are they sending back a day? Imagine all the mail that gets sent with 1 wrong letter/number.
They’ve lost my packages and fricked up deliveries continuously, and the people working there are never any help. Absolutely worthless carrier.
You sound like the issue. The USPS doesn't have time to babysit customers. Rest assured they don't have time to hunt down correct addresses or actually contact customers. They are way busier than you think. Learn to submit your correct info when ordering online.
However, since you think they're the issue and not you, I'll break it down for you. Let's just assume "10 seconds" to correct the issue. That is beyond funny but...
USPS has approximately 7 BILLION pieces of undeliverable mail each year. It's more than that but I'll go on the low side.
7,000,000,000x
10 seconds (laughable)
70,000,000,000 seconds
÷60=1,166,666,666 minutes
÷60=19,444,444 wasted hours
÷40=486,111 wasted weeks
÷52=9,348 years (required employees)
You're looking at an additional 9,300 employees on the low side.
It's not just 10 seconds and the truth is that it would take much longer thus increasing those numbers dramatically. Your mistake is one of the factors that increase shipping costs for everyone because the USPS actually absorbs those losses which is about $2 billion. It would probably be $10 billion if they did what you asked of them.
