Why does the US not have a foreign legion similar to the French Foreign Legion?

Seems like it could be useful in the current environment. Give illegals and criminals a path to citizenship and redemption. Extra cannon fodder for stupid foreign wars.

This happens they just join whatever branch of the military they qualify for

Fair enough. But still have to be semi-documented with generally clean past to join USMC.
I’m thinking more of a unit that is full of undocumented people and criminals - serve over 7 years and get a nee start, new life, new papers, US citizenship, etc - clean slate.

One big problem I see with this logic, is you are assuming that any type of service would reform them. Assuming most of their time spent is in conflict, people dont come back from that reformed. At best, you'd have a massive PTSD epidemic in these populations mixed with a criminal and/or mental illness history, with a free pass to the country.

Uh, the French Foreign Legion doesn’t take misfits and criminals. They may overlook a blemish in someone’s past if they are a strong candidate. But it is damn hard to get into the Legion. Most are ex-military from other countries.

There could be screening mechanisms not take completely physco people, and look for people that want to right thier ship but made incredible bad choices - not everyone gets in the French Legion.

Cause then mexican cartel will just have people enlist and then they will desert and bring the inner workings of the U.S and possibly weapons back to the cartel. And with the anti-american sentiment there, it would be teaching your enemies on how best to kill you.

Blackwater and the companies it became and became a part of (Constellis today) are primarily training and security firms not focused on direct action. When they started playing around in the direct action arena they got their arse waxed in Yemen and seemed to decide maybe security was as heavy as they wanted to get. That being said I have no idea how much if any black bag stuff they do today we really only hear about it when they frick up and probably only then if there are US casualties as they employ a lot of Columbian, Saudi, UAE, and Sudanese mercs. The US mercs tend to be officers and avoid a lot of the really dirty work.

From what I understand, Legion requires very little identifying documents to join, but is difficult to make it through selection to make the Legion. If one makes it, they get a new identity.
