re: Why does the OT think Cruises are Trashy?

Carnival is somewhat trashy, but again, not always as trashy as people here think. I mean, if you went on a 3 day cruise out of NOLA, then it was probably every bit as trashy as the OT would have you believe.

We knew nothing about cruises, so we went in with no predetermined idea of what it would be like. We took a shorter cruise because we weren't certain we'd enjoy being stuck on a boat. We came to realize that choice was just doubling down on terrible. The shorter trips are redneck booze cruises (at least out of NOLA). It was comical. The wife and I got the most entertainment out of looking at the photos they put out each day. Grown adults taking prom-like pictures. Lady with the kittens in a basket t-shirt that wasn't wearing it ironically. And the "dress-up" night
. I definitely saw a man in a 1970's big collar brown suit and a wolf howling at the moon tie. And this guy was not old enough to have owned this suit in the 70s. Also do not feel it was ironic. Saw parents tucking the tags into their kids suit so the can return them after the cruise, etc. And this was a total shock because we didn't even know there was a "fancy" night. This was Carnival and I hear they are the worst, so I won't say that all are bad. We just didn't know and probably picked the worst one. It makes it difficult to want to go on another one. It sound's petty, but people really did act like trashy animals. Loud, obnoxious, drunk, fat (FAAATTTT), redneck, and terrible were words I said regularly on the boat.

I will admit my first cruise was a Carnival cruise and I walked away very unimpressed. To the point I didn't want to do another cruise.
Then my wife booked a Disney cruise for us and dragged me along. Complete 180. I have actually been requesting to do another one in a year or two.

That looks so fcking awesome. My friends are doing a 7 night trip on one of those in January out of BVI. I'm pretty damn jealous.

It's a floating buffet. Nothing is trashier than a buffet

Most of the food on a cruise isn't buffet style. I've been on several and never eaten at a buffet.

My youngest kid is 3 and I want to wait til she's about 6 before we do it

The cheap ones are like floating walmarts. It's true. That's what most people see. Why pay all that money to be trapped on a boat with so many people when you can fly to a destination in a few hours and enjoy the whole week there instead. Cruises only take you to the tourist trap ports and you miss out on the real places you should see.
Example: cruises take you to Montego Bay which is a shithole. Instead you could go to Negril and enjoy every minute.

The Carnival answer is correct.
Also, I was visiting Key West and the place suddenly being flooded by 3000 people off a Royal Caribbean ship had a cattle call feel to it.
It's like air travel. There's a trade-off when efficiency makes it available to everybody.

We rarely get off the ship when we go. Everyone else gets off and we stay on the deck and get excellent service from the wait staff while enjoying a nice view.

Cruise Issues to Consider:
Legal:
A ship at sea during a international cruise route obviously goes into international waters and then into foreign jurisdictions. Your passport is locked (hopefully) in the purser's safe on a cruise ship. When/if you leave the cruise ship without your passport, bad things can happen and if they do happen to you, it is then further complicated. Bad things can and do also happen onboard the vessel and one's rights are limited. While this is also true aboard an aircraft, the exposure time window is much smaller and I trust the usually former U.S. military flight crew on a Delta/AA jet more than Captain Zehahoukis from a cruise line.
Safety:
Fire at sea is a nightmare. Rough weather at sea, mechanical breakdowns, etc... All bad and there is no quick fix and no where to go to escape. The cruise ship Captain's native language is different than most every one else on the crew. The crew make shite for wages and have passengers as a captive audience for the entire visit. Biological and viral issues in the confined area at sea are also an issue.
tl/dr: Too much on cruises I can't control.
P.S.: I'd consider an inland River cruise in Europe. Smaller vessels, many less passengers, Russian run, always within swimming distance of the shoreline.

Disney cruises are awesome.
I think we are going to try a Norwegian one for Mardi Gras.
I would do Disney again but I hate flying and I am not driving from br to Miami.
Why does the ot think they are trashy? Bc you see them advertised at 275/person for 5 days all the time.
Those are the shitty rooms though.

I thought you hated boats too?
Posted on 11/15/15 at 11:21 am to yellowfin
I hate little boats. I'm ok on the big ones.
My favorite part is not cooking or cleaning. And drinking all day.
Fwiw the three year old would love a Disney cruise.

You know you don't have to be on a cruise ship to not cook and clean and drink all day right?
A Disney cruise combines 2 things I hate. Disney and cruises....I'll pass

I hate land Disney. Sea Disney is awesome.
I have never been on a trashy cruise so I don't know if I hate them or not.
This one is going to be expensive so hopefully i don't have to mix with the poors.

My biggest problem with both is I hate crowds
Posted on 11/15/15 at 11:32 am to yellowfin
I never felt crowded on the boat. They do an amazing job with keeping everyone separated and moving on schedules.
I hate crowds too. Can't stand waiting and don't like people breathing on me.
