It's not that bad... that bad is Baltimore (which is on an entirely different level than anywhere else I've been, including Detroit). Jackson isn't great though- a lot like Montgomery. There is no reason to spend a lot of time there.

Crime is high, murder rate is astonishingly high but I have to imagine, like most cities, the murders generally happen in the same neighborhoods

Jackson is basically the worst characteristics of Baton Rouge and New Orleans combined without Mardi Gras, The Saints, And LSU.

By Contrast, Lafayette had 34 homicides parish wide. Population listed as 244,390 parish 478,384 Metro, 627,146 CSA. 34 may have been a record number of homicides for Lafayette.

I live in a suburb of Jackson and it is the nicest town I have ever lived in. Now, Jackson proper is another story all together with high taxes and high crime…I would never live there. Honestly though, I have lived in several places in Louisiana and around the country, and Jackson is just like every other southern city I have lived in including Baton Rouge and the West Bank.
