note i'm not saying all vaccines are bad but they are shoved down our throats as if they come from the Hand of God himself.

That's because vaccines only work if an overwhelming majority of the population takes them. Yes I completely resent shithead idiots that put my children at risk of developing a mutated smallpox because they won't vaccinate their kids.

my officemate got a flu vaccine at the beginning of the season..and caught the flu..not just the flu..but the VERY STRAIN of the flu this vaccine supposedly warded against

Flu vaccines are a slightly different issue since they have to be taken every year.

If you seriously can't figure out the fundamental difference between a herd immunity vaccine and a convenience based medication then there is no point in having this conversation.

Vaccines are another thread.

This dude is whining because his friend OD'd and he blamed the doctors.

Who would he blame if the doctors cut him off and he started looking for street heroin?

What argument? There is absolutely no herd immunity to the flu. No one has ever argued that.

The reason why anti-vaccines is so reviled is the opposition to things like the MNR vaccine, where other parents refusing vaccines puts vaccinated people at risk. It's that simple.

I don't think anyone particularly cares if you do or do not get a flu vaccine.

my position is that all meds are subject to the same fallibility and just because something is labelled a 'vaccine' makes it in no worse or better than any other drug that has been approved by the FDA.

But that level of fallibility is widely variable, so you can't say one drug is "no worse or better than any other drug that has been approved by the FDA."

In very simple terms, some drugs ace the FDA's approval tests with an A+, and some scrape by with a C, but both are ultimately approved. And prescribing physicians (should) know which drugs barely scraped by, and that is where the variability in prescribing volume comes from.

Enough vaccines have aced the FDA's test that their effectiveness isn't questioned any longer. BUT, that's not to say a NEW vaccine shouldn't be held to similar scrutiny. HIV vaccines, for example, should be heavily scrutinized b/c they haven't achieved the same level of scientific effectiveness as a D-TAP, TD, Rotavirus, etc...

FDA trials are a barometer for effectiveness, not a determination.

you'd be wrong. i know several companies that put a great deal of pressure on employees to get flu shots.

Well they have a vested interest in not paying out sick time, regardless of the science behind any medicine. Anyway we are far off topic here. Hollywood is against anti-vaccine because it could irreparably damage our public health. Criticizing over-prescription is a scientifically different issue.

its still hypocrisy at its finest.

vilify doctors and call them pharmaceutical shills when you want to push your pharma-companies-are-evil agenda

praise doctors and raise your fists in solidarity for the uncontested truth of all vaccines when there's a conservative-based backlash against them.

in the second case, they are advocating government putting a gun to your head to force you to accept the 'red pill' for the good of the PEOPLE.

A friend of mine got addicted to oxycontin, which he was prescribed after having surgery on his shoulder. He went to rehab.. Not just any rehab, but it was one that cost a good bit. Once people keep clean the rehab works them back into a life with structure, etc, but when he first started talking it, the only intention was to get pain relief, but he became addicted. There are other options for pain than Oxy, but don't be naive and think every doctor out there would never do such a thing.

this is foolish. people get addicted to everything from cigarettes to alcohol to huffing lysol.

how is this the dr's fault for giving him a pain-killer?

its not unless he ignored very obvious signs that the person he was prescribing to was a junky

and even still, it isn't the doctor's fault, but it does make the doctor an enabler

Not really, but I can see you simply don't want to engage in this on any sort of factual scientific basis.

quote:

praise doctors and raise your fists in solidarity for the uncontested truth of all vaccines when there's a conservative-based backlash against them.

The fringe right and the drive left have both started refusing vaccines, so don't make this about politics. Some of the highest rates of un-vaccinated children are in ultra left areas of the west coast.

Tough shite. I'm a small government advocate, but protecting the public health is a very basic and very important aspect of government.

Hyperbole much?

What is taken away from you if you refuse vaccines? Maybe your access to public schools. Maybe your access to your physician's office. What else?

I WISH I could force all parents to get their kids the HPV vaccine, but I can't b/c it's antithetical to our countries beliefs as a whole. But in this instance, that freedom is ultimately a negative to society. But this instance is the outlier. That freedom is great in most aspects of life.

So if we can't jail them, I have no problem with shunning and berating them. But no one is putting a gun to anyone's head over a vaccine.
