How lazy can you be to Uber Eats McDonald's

I just put my kids down to sleep at 8:15pm and was craving a Quarter Pounder with Cheese, no onions, and a large fry. Didn't have the means to go and get it

They're pretty much all contract drivers now which means they get to see the tip before accepting the order. I suggest giving a reasonable tip based on how far they have to drive instead of a percentage of the total. Also, I only use free delivery codes when I have to get food delivered.

You should also check out the menu prices on those apps versus the store menu too. And the service charge, delivery fee, etc in addition to the tip.

All in you could be paying nearly twice as much for your food at some places to have it delivered. Uber Eats in particular has insane markups and fees.

They all markup food prices.

Pro Tip incoming:

When JBE did the EO or whatever to allow for alcohol delivery it stated they could not up charge for it and it has to accompany at least one food item. You can order as much alcohol as you want at the regular store price and then add a pack of slightly overpriced gum and you're good to go.

In case they don't care for what you have ordered.

One way or another, they gotta eat.

Duh.

My biggest issue is that they make you tip BEFORE delivery. I've had drivers that went above and beyond...called to see if I needed anything else, were polite, checked the order who I wish I would have tipped more. Inversely I've had drivers who took inexplicably long and clearly didn't check and delivered the wrong shite I wish I had tipped less....dumb model

Not to mention that your proactive tip rate is being used by the driver to determine the level of service you deserve. Exact opposite of how tipping is supposed to work.

My son's gf did this a couple years ago as a side job while in graduate school. DD has a minimum tip they pay a driver. Hers back then was $2.50, so if you tipped $4, DD would offer the driver $2.50 and pocket the rest for DD. Drivers at that rate depending on the distance would refuse to accept the order until enough time goes by where DD will keep raising the price offered until a driver determines it's worth picking up. You can also pay tip at the door but most don't.

The % tip they ask for is always so ridiculous

And then they make the UI treat you like an evil person for doing a custom tip that is actually equal to the work being done.

I love tipping the drivers cause they're doing a service for me and I know UberEats can't really touch that money, but I'm not giving someone a $15 tip just because my order was expensive but no more difficult to handle/drive over. My tip is based on time spent "working" on my order, as well as distance of the delivery.

I don't disagree with that, but I guess how is that any different than at a restaurant?

If you buy a $100 steak versus a $10 burger, and both are brought to the table with nothing else, what justifies a $20 tip versus a $2 tip? I always tip 20% no matter what, and I am guessing many others are the same. Even though my tip for food delivery is always a flat fee like you mentioned. Just weird why one seems acceptable versus not.

Well they are having to overcome gas use, wear and tear, and making a profit. There's no way for them to know if it's worth the drive unless the tip and pay amount is already known. Plus the time they have to wait at many of these restaurants for the food to be ready. If the payout is $3.00 you gonna decline it, if it's $7.00 for a 2 mile round trip you know it's more than likely worth accepting. Even accepting it though, you can go to a restaurant and be stuck there much longer than you thought and it still not be worth it.

You don't have to tip in London. Its in the price; clean, simple, and consistent. I like that model.

see but in these apps you can either 'pre-tip' and change the tip after rating their service or flat out tip on delivery. you just didnt know how or want to utilize the model in a way that addressed that problem.

but if you go back to the traditional tip on delivery from the app, good drivers may not want to gamble on an unknown tip if theres a known good tip. shite drivers may be carefree with your delivery with a known good tip, or may not accept the delivery if they expect a bad tip. they probably just kinda count on customers to not be the a-hole back and renege on the agreed upon payment.

Wife tips accordingly when she places the order. I tip $5.00 cash when it arrives. She did rescind a tip once after I noticed salsa on the drivers shirt and ours was missing from our order.

I have this problem at restaurants with wine. If I order a $40 bottle I should tip the same as if I order a $500 bottle. The work is identical.

At least you tip. I did DoorDash for a while and a $5 tip is on the higher end of most tips I received. Every once in a while you’ll get an occasional $15-$20 tip, but most tips are $5 or below. Don’t ever take a fast food order, especially Popeyes, because there’s likely no tip at all.
