Why do we make our Guards stay in Shacks ?

Guard shack ? Wtf is that ? I propose we call them Guard Palaces. Or maybe Guard Estates.

When I served Topside Watch (guard duty) in the Navy, my shack was a port-o-potty without the toilet.
Imagine being on a river in CT during the winter with a -20 wind chill factor. That damn thing was worthless

Because it's a guard booth? Maybe a really dilapidated booth in a rundown area of town could be called a guard shack?
