re: Why do super cheap people think it’s a good quality to boast about?

It's amazing to see someone's outlook on money matters that have had parents that grew up in the depression versus those who did not... My parents grew up in the depression and were well off in later life.. They past down the respect for money and saving for the future....

When did the "standard" become 20% ? Why not 25% or 30% ?

"cheap" is one of those subjective terms.
People who spend like drunken sailors tend to think anyone being responsible is cheap.
I have a family member(very well off financially) who thinks it's "cheap" to buy a used car for example.
They are completely out of touch with reality and they don't even realize it.

Big difference between being frugal and being a mooch

Guilty to a degree. I’m pretty frugal in only spending money unless it’s what I really want. It’s hard to not wait for a good deal. I am guilty of spending entirely too much time before pulling the trigger on some stuff though. It’s just difficult going against your nature on spontaneous purchases.
You’ve likely cost yourself many good deals “waiting” just to wait. Your types perceive taking an absurd amount of time a good thing.

I'm not cheap, I'm financially responsible.

How is your retirement and rainy day fund?

There's a difference between being financially responsible and being cheap as frick.
If I could go back to 20 year old me and spent 25 years being cheap as frick, I could have retired at 45.
Instead I blew and wasted money and have very little to show for it and will work until 67.

Running water is probably cheaper than disposable plates and utensils.

Being cheap and financially responsible aren't the same thing.

The most annoying people in cheap O world are those who drive all over just to save like 10 cents a gallon on gas. Congrats on saving 2 bucks on a 20 gallon fill up I guess
They could easily just drive 100mph everywhere and not use as much gas.

The next door neighbor approached my Dad to put our trash cans on the property line and he would do the same. At that time, the parish picked up the trash twice per week for $2 per quarter.
His angle was that the parish couldn't tell who's trash it was and so they could alternate paying the $2/quarter and save $4/ year.
This dude also gave a seminar to his family on how to use the least amt of toilet paper.

It’s annoying as hell.
Allowing others to annoy you is a you problem. Ignore the frickers....

They love to say “I’m cheap to a fault.”
Yep being cheap and not understanding quality sometimes comes at a cost. I see it in equipment purchases. Some want the cheapest item, but then when they realize it doesn’t do x, y, and z, they get mad and say why didn’t you tell me it couldn’t do x. Well you only wanted something for a, b, and c at the cheapest price.

quote:Your grandparents didn’t “like” saving money. They were scarred and were scared into saving money. The real fear of hunger and want (that they’d experienced) is a wonderful motivator.
I’m like my grandparents. They saved money because they liked saving money more than spending it. It’s a different concept in today’s culture.
You don’t fear hunger today, if you “like” saving money, that’s a lifestyle choice. Merely a priority on your part, not a response to panic.
tl/dr: Modern-day folks don’t get the Great Depression.
