This thread sent me down a rabbit hole on the subject. There was a case in Vermont where a woman's druggie son invited some lowlifess in and she couldn't get them to leave. She cut off The utilities and The court made her turn them back on as long as the case was still pending.
Basically, the law in most states is written with tenant-landlord disputes in mind. Unfortunately it often doesn't distinguish between that and clear cut trespassing.
Often, it starts with some kindhearted person agreeing to let someone use their property and then can't get rid of them. The other kind does happen but is comparatively rarer.

I can confirm not one bad thing happened…. To the squatters as their family called them… a lot of bad happened.
Until you experience it, there is no way of explaining the amount of anger you go through when someone is saying what you own is now theirs. I can assure you , you’re not thinking of having to get a lawyer or go through the courts and the cops are called after the smoke clears.
Trust me, being a law abiding citizen goes out the window when you see a totally lack of respect of your property by being trashed and the people who did it mocking you.
