re: Why do some states not allow alcohol sales on Election Day? This is when we need it most.

What are you talking about? It was not that long ago that you couldn't buy hard liquor in East Baton Rouge Parish on a Sunday, so the only bars you could go to for the Saints game was across the river. We used to leave the bars early on Saturday nights just to be able to buy a case a beer for Sunday morning prior to 2am when they shut it down because beer & wine couldn't be sold until after 12pm on Sunday, just late enough to make you miss kickoff.
frick Blue Laws

We can't buy wine or liquor at a package store on Sunday's in Bossier Parish. But can buy all the beer you can drink.

Puritans, maybe, but not conservatives.

Because when democrat politicians round up ignorant voters and transport them to the polls, closed bars make those pints of Thunderbird more valuable as a payoff.

The Election Day sales ban is a ridiculous relic of the Prohibition era when saloons sometimes served as polling stations
It goes back much further than that. The Colonial era was notorious for well funded candidates providing whole communities of unlimited alcohol on Election Day.
Regardless, times change and these laws are outdated relics of by-gone eras.

That quote is wrong. South Carolina lifted its ban in 2014

The only states that still cling to statewide Election Day sales bans of alcohol at restaurants, bars and package stores are Kentucky, Indiana and South Carolina. Utah and West Virginia still ban the sale of alcohol at package stores on Election Day. Alaska and Massachusetts also ban Election Day alcohol sales, except that local governments are authorized to provide an exemption from the ban.
Serious question. Does Alaska already have some unusual laws on alcohol? I remember when I was younger someone told me that it was illegal for Eskimos (are they still called this?) to drink while flying. Actually this was in high school in the really early days of the internet so it wasn't googled, which I am about to do.
But its crazy to me that people are on the edge on election day. It seems like people use to go vote, go about their day and then that night people watched the election results, the next day or two people would talk about it then just go own with their lives, but social media does no favors for the mental state,

My favorite saying is "Remember to buy your fifth for the 4th on the 3rd."
It doesn't apply today, but people who are hard drinkers know when the liquor stores will be closed.
In Oklahoma, they are allowed to open after the polls close, I think.

I actually experienced this. I arrived in Puerto Vallarta on an election day. I had a rental car and stopped at their version of Costco on the way to my hotel. All the liquor was covered with shrink wrap. I was like, what the frick?
They said it was because of election day. I had to pay for hotel beers that day.

Similar story, I went on a hunting trip to Montana and we just arrived on election day. We stopped at the last store we would see for the next week to get our remaining provisions including alcohol before heading up the mountain to the camp, and no alcohol sales on election day.

Kentucky changed its law in 2013.

I was actually in Mexico City during one of the presidential elections there, and they cut off sales until later in the day

Was at a Mexican resort once for this. We knew and were prepared with booze in hand. When other guests were told of the law at an orientation, they all got up and walked to the nearest liquor store to stock up ahead of time.
