They aren’t secure enough in their appearance to make a normal face. So when they look at the photo they don’t say “frick I am (below) average looking.” Instead they say “wow! What a zany face! I am super unique!” And never truly have to confront their mediocrity.

There’s a Trump supporter I know that has made that face in every photo for the last 15 years. I’m talking “went to Trump’s inauguration in a MAGA hat” type Trump supporter too.
