Why do so many southern areas refer to themselves as americans on ancestry surveys?

The entire south outside the bayous and the black belt should be colored either dark purple (irish) or light purple (english/scottish)
Yet we have this "american" dominating southern counties and parishes.
You don't see this "american" be reported in rural new england, which is mostly irish and english as well.
midwesterners also don't check off "american" on ancestry surveys.

I've never seen this before, maybe it's just THIS survey.

This is a weird thread. I'm supposed to be outraged that people consider themselves American?
I was born in America. My parents were born in America. Their parents were born in America, and their parents as well.
How many fricking generations back have to be born here before I can call myself an American?

I don't have a problem with that answer. Never sure where "surveys" will go.

It is very odd, I see no issue with checking the box "American"

My parents were American.

Because I was born here?

Is this some type of bait, or you subtly inferring Southerners are stupid?

Why does NO OTHER region of america answer like this?
The midwest, the west, the northeast.....all answer it like you'd expect. Where your ANCESTORS LEFT to come here./

Maybe they don’t know their ancestry

Is this something we need to be offended by? I can't always keep up with the trends

Well god damn, you must have an opinion on the issue, what do you think the reason behind it is?

Is your survey going wrong? You seem mad.

It shouldn't matter where you come from, just where you are going and what you are doing.
