That's just dumb. You have to be a miserable person if you can't go have a good time in New Orleans. Just not where I would want to live myself or raise a family

True Story. See my comment on "small town mindset".

TBH, many folks from small towns or rural hate Nola bc it conjures up an image of, say, Haiti or Congo.

Old buildings, bad roads, and more brown people scare them

It's mainly because they all fell for the shoe gag on bourbon street

Yup. I once had a deposition in one of the "tall" buildings in downtown BR, like the 12th floor or something, and the bumpkins from right there in Livingston parish were going on about how BR is the big city and they were amazed at the view from the window. Lots of those types.

It's different. I'm from a small town, I never liked Nola much until I came here a few times with an open mind. Now that I moved here, I love it.

Crossing the street to the other sidewalk to avoid them doesn't work in NO.

Its really because they went to NOLA once and spent all of their time on Bourbon Street. I would hate NOLA too.

They haven't been lately and seen the renaissance of the city. They haven't had a beautiful day drinking in courtyard uptown. Or had wine at Bacchanal on a nice spring night. Danced their arse off on Frenchmen Street. Caught Rebirth at the Maple Leaf.

There's also an idea that the city doesn't offer much beyond drinking and partying...

I think it's pretty common in states that have one "main" city for there to be some tension between that city and the rest of the state. For instance I've heard people from Southern Illinois talk about chicago in much the same way.

As to NO/BR especially, some BR folks treat any compliment to NO as an implied insult because they think that BR should be Louisiana's main city, but it's basically ignored by the rest of the country. It's why you get so many smartass comments about "culture."

Walk and shop on magazine street? Picnic at The Fly? Audobon Zoo? WW2 Museum?

I feel like a lot of OT posters are of the mindset that something being bigger or newer or more expensive automatically makes it "better". Such an attitude does not lend itself to appreciating the great and unique things about the city.

Lived in BR for 90% of my life and never met anyone who feels this way.

If you look at any BR vs NOLA thread on the OT, you'll see plenty
