I finally found some old black dude named Willy that did the work for me

Is Willy a general handyman? Can I have his number? I have a list of small jobs.

Your location is about 80% of your problem. Your labor pool is tiny for that type of work. No one from the South shore is driving over there daily for very little money.

I think Willy just does concrete. I still have his number saved as "Willy the Concrete Man" in my phone. He did a good job.

I have a guy that has several recommendations on my Nextdoor from my neighbors in BR. I'll give you his contact info but I honestly don't know anything about him.

Not all his fault, he inherited a solid, growing economy, much like he inherited a fortune as a young man. And he tries to take 100% credit for both. Typical, narcissistic blowhard.

Detached garage.

I think the worst part is I have experienced contractor fraud. I do not wish that on my worst enemy. Roughly $30,000 of our money was gambled away. Because of this I am pretty reluctant to hire just anybody.

A lot of those kids coming out of college with six figure debt from women's studies, PRTM or a marine biology degree would have been better served learning a trade.

I’ve been saying this for years. On the same token, my niece went to (legit) beauty school and got certified in several things. Laser hair removal etc. now she’s got good job offers and wants to open her own place someday... while her friends are accumulating debt on advertising and MRS degrees.

Moral is to learn a trade that’s interesting to you then apprentice and then profit. Takes a few years but such a huge demand for the less “cool” careers.

One thing that would turn me off to work like that is if I saw a larger problem with bad wood, where if I started pulling that thread it would all come unwound and you'd blame me for it. No thanks.

Why wouldnt you just explain that to the customer while you're scoping the work?

Makes it harder to arbitrarily jack up the estimate or final cost when you explain things up front.

In that position, my job is finding profitable work for me and nothing else. If a contractor felt like being sympathetic he might explain what’s going on, and that it would be much more expensive than the limited job the customer wants, but nobody is required to do anything like that. Why not just go find another job and make money?

Yep, thanks George W. Bush, his quick action saved us from a depression and fueled the robust economy we have today.

What does sympathy have anything to do with it? And no nobody is required to do it but it called business ethics. You’re ultimately leaving it up to the customer anyway. Here’s the scope of work, if all goes well it will cost around this amount. If this happens and I don’t think I’ll be able to do it without it happening it will cost around this amount. Yay or nay? If the job to begin with simply isn’t worth your time that’s different I understand that. But not being up front about the scope of work isn't really efficient and seems would cause the exact problem you brought up in your other post.
