As a Controller here in Houston, I insist on simpler spreadsheets. The reasons are as follows:
1. complex spreadsheets are one way to facilitate embezzlement
2. complex spreadsheets are usually the way in which an employee builds sandbags around his castle in the hopes of making his job irreplaceable because he is the only one who understands them
3. Not allowing complex spreadsheets makes it easier for me to fire your arse when you piss me off.
4. I am 68, I do math in my head, I know how to write, i can tell time with a normal watch now furthermore I know how to get places without a map and I also know how to function when the power goes out and renders all the computers useless.
5. Keep on working, my generation needs your social security money.
6. Kiss my arse

Complex spreadsheets are also a way of turning 8 hours of work into 1 hour of work. You know, efficiency. Why can’t I use index/match functions to save time and money? Because you don’t understand them and think I’m embezzling money? Wut
Sounds like you need to take a computer class, not force your employees to dumb down their work

What do they want you to use instead of INDEX/MATCH? VLOOKUP? If they understand VLOOKUP well enough to check those formulas, it would take like 5 minutes of explanation for them to understand INDEX/MATCH. Not to mention that INDEX/MATCH can do a lookup to the left of a reference cell and allegedly takes less time for the processors to calculate.
