Agreed. It's impossible to have a firm grasp of economics and favor more govt control.

Capitals sm or socialism either.

These words are conflated by the American understanding of them. There are few, actual socialists in America, despite the high numbers claiming to be now. They want a stronger social safety net and don't oppose higher taxes to do it. They don't want a command economy though.

Just like capitalism is conflated with the crony version we've seen for decades. That gave us the 2008 downturn. That saw the already wealthy feast on asset appreciation, and the young have a bunch of additional debt starting out.

Both terms don't mean what they actually are defined as in America.

Purposely misused to confused easily manipulated people.

Again, most people under 40 can't define socialism as it's meant to be

There aren't alternative definitions. These people are confusing social democracies (capitalist) with democratic socialism (command economy).

They've perverted the latter. Socialism is an economic system, not a type of government. The social safety net has nothing to do with socialism

Been misused by political actors over the years, sure. This has changed what most people think when they hear the words.

Republican rhetoric over the years would have you thinking differently.

I agree with you that words have meaning and they aren't used correctly in today's political environment.

Republicans are no better than Democrats. Collectivism doesn't change just because the party does. It's just two huge government propaganda machines.

We would be better served if our system allowed for 4 or more parties

Let's face it, the parties aren't exactly wowing Americans

If you aren’t a little liberal when in college or college aged, you have no soul.

If you aren’t a little conservative as you age, you have no sense.

Probably. Certainly get more people feeling like they have a stake in the game. Though, the UK is showing us the problems with keeping governing coalitions in such systems. No system is perfect though.

No disagreement on the state of our great parties or the state of the media apparatuses that make $$ off the collective divides.

Generally true.

It's amazing how much life changes a person between the ages of 20-45. In fact if someone can't change, something's wrong with them.

Economically people can be conservative while still advocating weed, abortion, and caring about the planet. It's called not being a fricking idiot

They go left in college because it’s fun and exciting and life is a party. Then they get a degree, get some debt, get married, get more debt, have kids, buy a house and get more debt. Then they realize that adults who want to make a decent living and accomplish certain goald can’t live in a liberal world. So, they lean right again. Everyone’s a liberal at some point. You’re supposed to grow up at some point. Some never do.

We’ll disagree on abortion. It’s an abhorrent act in MOST cases.
