Why do I have to enter zip code AND city/state when using online forms?

I am talking about for newer websites.

Are there a bunch of duplicate zip codes out there?

its a redundancy thing. Difficult to get both the zip and city/state wrong but right at the same time.

Do you think zip code boundaries always mirror municipality administrative boundaries?

Why do I have to put in my credit card number AND say what type of card it is. The first number of the card identifies what card it is....

Starts with 3 - Amex
Starts with 4 - Visa
Starts with 5 - MasterCard
Starts with 6 - Discover

Whew! I'm so glad it's HIS fault and not mine. I was starting to believe it was because I touch myself. Glad to know I can keep on keeping on.

My guess is, it's a method of double verification, in case you mistyped a digit of the zip code. But I have wondered the same thing about addresses. Why do I need to put city and state on the letter, the zip code already tells the post office where the letter is going.

Often zip codes encompass more than one city.

There is also a small handful of multi-state zip codes.

Alot of sites will throw up a little image of card type when you start typing it in.

Fewer and fewer are requiring the TYPE to be selected.

Yeah, it goes deeper than that but the 3, 4, 5 and 6 will hold true, check your wallet. I think airline cards start with a 1 or 2. 7 would be a gas card.

All that double verification and then USPS delivers it to the wrong address. You can only do so much I guess.

I actually learned it a long time ago at one of my first part time jobs, taking CC payments for St. Jude's Dream home. I had to type in what TYPE of credit card was being used and they had a little 'cheat' system with the numbers off to the side. I was like "whooooooaaaaa" and it just stuck with me after that haha

ETA: I do need to take a shopping break though. :(

My guess is because it’s simpler for the developer to have the user fill in that information than to build/maintain logic in the web code or set up a table to hold that information.

Same reason they ask you to re-enter your email address or password. Error validation.

Why do I have to hold the pillow over her mouth when I enter your mom? Some things are just not meant to be understood.

It's already there. If you enter a number starting with a 4 then say it's a Mastercard you will get an error.
