The historically black moniker is just a reference to their roots in hopes of establishing a since of pride within the university..and some of them need all the pride they can muster because they are generally poor colleges. Not unlike others scattered all over the country that aren't historically black. We should be reducing our collegiate footprint as mobility and access have changed, so it's tough to blame a college for marketing themselves in a way that makes it tough to downsize. Doesn't mean it's right though.

Alabama A&M vs UAH is an interesting example in Huntsville. A&M's engineering dept has instrumentation that UAH could only dream about, despite the vast difference in quality of instruction, research output, and reputation.

True story, there is a $2-3 million electron microscope that is only used in the summer, when the REU program is running.

It does promote segregation for sure. But How are those colleges racist against whites?

It doesn't have to be racist against whites for it to be a symbol of racism/segregation.

It's a psychological thing for blacks. They probably only make up less than 5% of colleges/universities, but there is probably a higher % that actually finish school from one than other diversified learning institutions.
