Why do Eagles and Hawks ride the updrafts?

Are they hunting? Are they looking for dead animals? Or, do they just enjoy stretching out their wings and soaring?

It’s the fastest way up the mountain side

They can continue to look for prey or whatever the goal is without expending energy

Spent the ninth grade watching hawks just “flying”!against the air currents….essentially “still” in the air.

Same reason you go with the current in a lazy river.
To be lazy and let it do the work for you

If you want a show, find some Purple Martins or Tree Swallows on a windy day. Those are the acrobats. They can fly higher, quicker, and are more agile than a hawk. So, if the hawk misses its first shot, or is spotted, the Martins will take off, soar in higher and higher circles above the hawk, and take turns dive bombing it. The hawk can't do anything but retreat. I've watched 15-20 Purple Martins chase a hawk clear out of site on numerous occasions.
Once that hawk misses or is spotted it almost becomes a sport for the Martins.
Another good show is when gnats or other insects start hatching over an open field. Martins, Tree Swallows, and Barn Swallows will spend hours feasting. They will start high, dive, swoop a foot or two above the ground, and have their mouths open the entire time.

Same reason you'd rather walk downhill. Free energy.

Why do some people capitalize common Nouns?

Why do some men prefer blondes?

It’s like surfing for birds.
Pelicans do the same along the Causeway..

I don't do it when using a general term like "hawk", but I do with "Red-tail Hawk", or "Purple Martin". That's just how I've always done it.

why do you set the cruise control ON when driving long distances on the Interstate ?
Soaring in the thermals allows hawks/vultures/eagles to fly with less effort

I only use cruise control in the passing, usually about 10mph below the limit is comfortable

I've seen similar things with starlings chasing crows away. I always wondered if the Crow was trying to get to the starlings eggs or young, and the starlings were protecting them, or if the starlings were chasing the crows away from their own nests so the starlings could go after the eggs/hatchlings.
