Thank God you clarified because at first I thought you were meaning a figurative 15 minutes.
15 minutes is thrown out a lot. I have tons of friends that are like, "I'll be there in 15 minutes" or "It took 15 minutes" and be lying their asses off. I just wanted to clarify because I thought that was common. Maybe my people suck!

Yes you can do it cheaper but you aren't a business trying to make money.
Yeah, because their overhead is so outrageous they have to get approximately 1000% return on their investment to make a reasonable profit. This is like saying the fine folks at the check cashing service are just trying to eke out a profit with their 400% APRs.

If she needs someone to check her oil. . . I'd oblige.

At most dealers, service managers can be paid + a commission. Their job is to up sell you. The more they sell the more they make. You need this, you need that, you may as well replace it now before it gives you problems. Soy boys and women are extremely vulnerable.

It’s much more than just ignorant consumers. The number of certified maintenance techs is declining, salary booming, and opportunity for blue collar jobs in other industries like welding, construction, manufacturing, truck driving etc. contributes to these costs.

Yeah. Thats what I payed for mine last time. Might have been 30 bucks. I just don't care enough to go to a store, buy a filter, and install to save 5 dollars.

It is ridiculous, but some cars are actually a pain for certain maintenance items.
I know on my Jeep, changing the air filter is a pain the way the engineers designed it. I do it myself, but it is annoying. It is not simply popping a few latches like it should be.
Had to replace a fog light in a CTS, it required me to remove the entire front facade to replace a bulb.
Was going to replace the timing chain on the wife's Acadia a couple of years back - guess what you have to drop the engine out of the fricking car to do that. That is how it was designed.
We should not be so mad at dealers and more mad at the way car manufacturers are designing difficult maintenance into them.

IF you are that inept that you can't change an air filter you deserve to pay $120.

This. I went to get the 4 tires on my wife's Honda CRV changed out and the sleazy manager that day came back with a list of $2800 worth of things "that need to be done." Said all my fluids needed to be changed. We had recently gotten the vehicle from her family and they had changed them all the month before. I'm extremely skeptical now when I go to car places.

Because its an easy way to make a quick $120?
Posted on 11/30/18 at 2:10 pm to yaboidarrell
Because if you’re too stupid to change one yourself you deserve to pay that.
It’s literally 4 screws and take the cover off. Some the cover just snaps on.

To take advantage of dumb fricks or old fricks who can't do it themselves....very simple.
Why don't you go buy one for $25-30 and do it yourself?
Changing anything on my beemer costs over $100.....thats why I do everything myself. The BMW dealership would probably charge $100 to replace the air freshener in my car.

There are many of reasons for this however since cars have become so much more intelligent as well as compact, you almost have to bring it to a dealer for more that the little things to do. I have dealt with a couple who down right suck. Ive noticed that the incompetence is ridiculous. they may have one or two "mechanics" but the rest of the people they employ off the street to do the BS things or things (Oil, fliuds, tire rotation tires etc) or the things that can be trained in a day or two (Alignment, belt change) are truly incompetent. The past dealership I used would break something every time they had my truck. I had another ruin a 2 year old truck. The best is when they say they performed a service but did not. Ive had one that claimed and charged me for Tire rotation, fluid top off, Def fill, and oil change. paid for all of it. I got in my truck, Def was still empty, washer was empty, and i could tell my tires weren't touched from the break dust on the front. The reason they charge $70 and Hr and higher than most for parts is because of what was stated earlier. High Overhead and maint writers commissions. they are paying a technician 15/hr to change your oil but charging you 70. they will often round the day up to you if its a couple hr Job to not have "Non billable time"
Posted on 11/30/18 at 3:59 pm to yaboidarrell
Because they need something to add-on when you're getting your oil changed.

Because dealerships make their margins selling cars. They actually lose money if they offer competitive rates for service.

Most mechanics are untrustworthy, and people believe dealerships are looking out for their best interest.
The dealerships are just as bad as most mechanics.
This is why so many people hate maintenance and just put it off. If you aren't able to work on your car, or find one of the few decent honest mechanics out there, you are totally screwed.
