Might be to prevent shoplifting. No idea if it actually helps.

Logically and statistically speaking it should work half the time.

I complained about this exact thing to someone yesterday as I tried to open a gas station’s door.

It’ll work at making shoplifters look dumb. Then they’ll run out the other side.

Not buying the shoplifting explanation. They don't chase the thieves, so why would they worry about slowing them down a step or two?

It's not. It's almost always b/c one door has slave bolts(top and bottom latches) and they forget or are too lazy to open them.

Because the internet demands funny videos of idiots running into glass doors. 2nd only to cat videos.

Yeah, I don't get it. Unless the door is broken, why keep it locked? I usually walk on the right side, so they you go to pull or push that door and you smash into it if it is locked.

I’m pretty sure it’s some sort of safety violation.

And a result of laziness on the part of the employees.

Just open the door with the deadbolt on it. It’s either open or both of the doors are locked. I’ve only been wrong one time in my life on this.

When I find doors like this, I unlock them. The Burger King where I live used to be famous for it and I'd unlock their 2nd door every time

You see that person on the other side of the door facing you when you walk in? They think it's fricking hilarious, that's why.

This is the only plausible and correct answer.
