The Sydney Opera House isn't so bad (I rather like it, especially given the location where it actually fits nicely), but I agree with the sentiment though and I'm not a fan of Frank Gehry for instance.

Yes, it is political. Wouldn't that be great if a consequence of the right wing populist movements in the west resulted in a revival of prewar European architecural styles?

Absolutely. I wish the architecture schools and licensing associations didn't have a monopoly on entry. If I could simply sit for an exam without having to have formal education, I'd want to at least try to make something.

Can we talk about how the inside and outside of the Brady house don't line up?

That was an era when aesthetic additions to municipal buildings were impossible to justify in budgets in most cases.

It goes beyond simply municipal buildings and ugly city hall's though. The style and tastes of the era was wretched and the desire to throw off the old (i.e. European looking, and I'm assuming as a result of WW1&2) gave us buildings with no heart and soul.

And the amusing thing is that you'll hear the same art critiques talk about ugly Soviet architecture while idolizing the exact same thing that was taking over the western world.

It's a gorgeous building, in my opinion.

It's also a lot different from some forms of modernist architecture... like Le Corbusier for instance. No thanks.

They're still building craptastic buildings in the name of being progressive or modern or something.

I was talking to young architect a few years ago at a function, just light chit chat. I started to complain about a residential building that was just built on Broadway near Freret. I commented about much it really didn't match the neighborhood and looked cheaply done.

She then tells me that she and her firm designed it! Talk about awkward!

Here's a picture of it from street view:

Richmond's old city hall is incredible and they moved to that monstrosity.

From a construction standpoint, Brutalist architecture was simple to design, and simple and inexpensive to build.

That's why it was very popular at colleges and universities in the 70's--the hockey-stick growth that they were experiencing during that time required many buildings built quickly and inexpensively to house the growth.

Nichols State Campus suffers from this. You've got Elkins hall and a couple of the older buildings in the front which are really pretty and collegiate looking, but when they added buildings around the quad, some of the dorms and the library during the 60's, 70's, and 80's, they were terrible. They came to their senses with the nursing building and some of the other new structures. Wish they could facade some of the other shite somehow

That doesn't bother me at all. Better than trying to fake it to look like other buildings in the area.

Well I'm legally blind... but I'm wearing my contacts.

Regardless, that's still a gabillion times better than the brutalist architecture.

That era looks good compared to the metal buildings that everything is made of now.
