Manual transmissions have practically gone the way of the dodo in the US. Most people don't want them and manufacturers barely produce them. When I bought my 3-series (10 years ago) I had to travel to another state to find a new manual. The dealer told me as of the early 90s, 40% of 3-series coming off the line were manual. By late 2006 they were down to like 8%. Can't imagine what that is now.

I can remember a time when automatic transmissions were an option you paid extra for. A LOT extra.

I'd love to have a stick again. It's a virtual guarantee that it'd never be stolen.

Right. In Germany it was still considered a luxury when I got there in 2009. As in, no one could believe an American would buy a BMW and not demand an automatic transmission.

Ha ha. No one is stealing it. Never have to worry about your wife or gf asking to drive it.

Go to Costa Rica.

It's difficult to find an automatic transmission there.

I had to specify that my Mustang must be a manual. The dealer had to find one halfway across DC, they didn't have one themselves to sell and this was one of the biggest dealers in the area.

I accept that automatics are more efficient and such but anything that resembles a muscle car simply must have a stick IMO.

This. Or back in High School with my first Jeep, the only 3 people in the house that could drive it were me and my parents. Told my folks that if they tried to teach my sisters to drive it then all the errands I ran for them couldn't happen, as they would be off joyriding.

I've also had my current TJ for close to 5 years. My wife seemed very interested in learning to drive it right after I got it. I really would like for her to at least know how in case of emergencies, but after the 5th or 6th time offering to teach her, I gave up. She always had some excuse. I think the only time she's ever even sat in the drivers seat was the day I bought it. My 9 year old, on the other hand, has already laid claim to it and I'm sure in 5-6 years I'll be teaching her how. She already wants to shift for me when I let her ride up front on short trips.

Which leads me to another point, my wife got pregnant shortly after I bought it, and kept hounding me to get something more practical. I had just bought her a Highlander, so we had a family car. She complained about car seats, I told her I could flip the back window open and put the baby in there. She complained about space, but 90% of the time I'm driving my daughter to school and then on to work. Then we got that freak winter storm and her Toyota was stuck a half mile from work, along with 99% of the cars in Birmingham. Until I drove to her office, stayed the night there, drove us up some steep icy hills to our son's daycare, delivering baby formula and other things they needed, then drove us home, as we passed hundreds or thousands of stranded cars and some flipped over in ditches, along with one that skidded into our front yard. The next day I went and picked her mom up from a hotel 20 miles away. She said she would never complain about it being impractical again. Stick shift and 4-Lo and it would go wherever I wanted to go.

People always ask me why I don't lock my jeep.

1. It's a stick shift. Ain't nobody got time to steal a stick shift today

2. Oh look. The doors locked... Let me just.... Unzip the fricking windows.

I am trying to sell my manual Jeep now. Even though I have listed "manual transmission" in the description I still get someone that wants to come by and test drive who opens the door and then notices the stick and says I can't drive this. My reply is "you can learn."

Took my wife to lunch one day, and had the back windows out. She locks the door. We get done and she's standing there not opening the door, and I ask why she isn't getting in. She said she locked it. I tell her to look about 8 inches back from the handle and tell me what she sees. Probably the only time my doors have been locked in the entire time I've owned it. Besides, all the good stuff is locked away in the Tuffy console.

I'm probably just gonna end up dropping a few grand on an old 350z, rag it out, then sell if whatever I can get for it a few months later

You know you are old when you call a manual a "standard" transmission.

When I was shopping for insurance on my car, the guy asked me if it had a theft deterrent device installed. I told him, yeah it was a four speed and we both had a laugh over it and he gave me the discount.

Supply & Demand. There is little Demand, so a very little supply.

Because not everyone can drive a manual and they don't want to have inventory sitting empty cause they are out of automatics and the customer can't drive a manual. Also people like you who want to have fun will probably tear up their transmissions having said fun even more than already happens with rentals.
