Why can't you rent a car with a manual transmission?

I've been wanting to scratch my itch to get some kind of fun car. I think just a day or two would be enough to satisfy me. I can't find any place that will rent a car with a manual transmission. Even the "sports cars" different companies rent all have automatics.

Fly to Europe...you can rent a POS with a standard in France.

A day or two won't be enough to satisfy you. I'd let you drive either of mine, but I don't know you and you probably suck driving them.

So they don't come back with burnt clutches?

Because they know you'll redline it.

Because most 25 year old people would dump the clutch 3 times before they got it off the lot.

1. People renting them would destroy them because they don't know how to use them.

2. People working at the car rental facility don't know how to drive them either.

Manual transmissions have practically gone the way of the dodo in the US. Most people don't want them and manufacturers barely produce them. When I bought my 3-series (10 years ago) I had to travel to another state to find a new manual. The dealer told me as of the early 90s, 40% of 3-series coming off the line were manual. By late 2006 they were down to like 8%. Can't imagine what that is now.

In Europe most rentals were actual manual as of a few years ago. Can't speak for now.

It amazes me how few sports cars for sale have a manual. I guess if it's a daily driver automatic is convenient, but otherwise why in the hell wouldn't you get a manual

A coworker of mine said the same thing. Couldn't find a manual Jeep Wrangler anywhere in town, and I live in Birmingham with several large dealerships. I think they had to order one. That was unheard of in the 80s and 90s. You had to look for one that was an automatic.

So few people know how to drive them. You want a car that appeals to the majority of drivers. Also, you don't want to worry about having to replace a clutch on cars driven by those who don't know how to drive them. Rental cars are, for the most part, intended to be boring. That way you are less likely to drive it hard.

I was looking at jeeps at one point, and couldn't believe it was so hard to find a manual. I also looked at the m series Bmw's and to get a manual, I would have to special order it. They said, "you will have paddle shifters or the steptronic shifter". explained the whole reason I was looking at that series was for a manual, with a clutch.

I worked briefly at a rental car place until I found the job I have now, and if you saw the people that come in and rent cars regularly, you'd know why they dont offer manual transmission cars. We had vehicles that had 4 wheel drive and they would always come back messed up because of people messing with them, and not knowing how to properly use them.

You also wont see any cars that take diesel. Thats another easy way for customers to mess up cars.

Because 75% of the customers wouldn't be able to drive it. And of the ones who can drive a manual, most would dog the car out.

You can get a Honda Accord with one but you will be looking for a while.

Better luck with a Camaro or that little Toyota sports car.
