There are also interesting character traits of the two universities, OSU and UofO. The charters of the two schools as well as the culture of their students are diametrically opposed to each other. While OSU is a science and engineering university, Oregon is liberal arts and science. For many years OSU didn't even offer graduate studies in the liberal arts. Historically, the students and the universities don't really like each other, either. Back in the day, many in OR referred to the UofO as the University of California at Oregon.

Lot of those states had one sort of erudite liberal arts college and one ag school type college. It

You must have attended the ag school since you can’t use erudite correctly.

I've always wondered why some big state universities are near the borders of the state.

Washington State and the U of Idaho are ten miles apart and a long long way from the major population centers of their states (though not too far from Spokane).

It is odd but they do make for some of the nicest, friendliest college towns I've ever visited. In no small part because they are so isolated.

It’s not hard to find universities close, the challenge is state schools

This is true.

The Civil War resulted in a riot after the 1910 game.

Eugene is a nothing but dirty hippies. Prefontaine was a baller though.

Zoom out and put it on satellite view. You'll notice that is the only small cleared area in a state that is entirely forest

Actually half the state is high desert so we have a lot less forest than you might think. But yeah, the Willamette Valley is small relative to the state as a whole. But big enough to entice waves of pioneers and a classic video game.

There's also 10 million people in LA county. Actually not that many schools for that population.

Junior colleges. Private schools.

The valley sucks. The high desert is where it’s at.

University of Utah and BYU are 45 miles away from each other geographically . Culturally, they are a couple of galaxies away.

The main campus of U Mass is in Amherst (Western Mass) - about 5 miles from Smith College (a lovely place).

How so?

Perhaps you aren’t enough to detect the twinge of intended irony. But I think I already suspected as much.

I've been to a number of "Civil War" games. Unfortunately, at that time BOTH schools had really bad football team.

You sound like you'd make a nice OSU grad! Yeah, Steve Pre was a great distance runner. So sad that a drunk driving accident took him in his prime. I grew up 25 miles from his hometown and he was revered. When he was at OR, they even frequently telecast OR track meets on tv.
