My grandpa used to love to say "You know how many people are dead in there" as we were driving by a cemetery. As a kid you'd ask how many expecting a number and his answer was "all of them"

serious answer: In the old days, family cemeteries were on the family farm, a fence would keep the livestock from knocking over and otherwise desecrating the tombstones.
The tombstones were often sedimentary rock (easier to work and who could afford granite from NC etc.) and livestock excrement erodes lots of sedimentary rock.

People steal everything not bolted down. This would reduce opportunities to grab things like cement benches.... two cement benches were stolen from my wife’s gravesite because........one can easily drive through and there are no fences. Escape is quickly done. Phuckers!!

I moved into a house next to a cemetery as a kid.
Then the first horror movie ever i watched was return of the living dead. Saw it before I started kindergarten. Was fricked up.

It’s a throwback to when people were trying to keep livestock from grazing in the cemetery.

Grave robbing used to really be a big thing too. People used to be buried in their fancy jewelry and with expensive possessions.
But I'm not sure that is why. The cattle grazing makes more sense.
