re: Why are some folks so compelled to acquire possessions and social advancement?

shite! Someone has different taste than you!
People can drink what they want; it’s the perverse pride they have in it that I don’t understand. It’s the equivalent of everyone waking up one day and bragging about liking a McDonald’s hamburger more than a good steak. If it’s true, it’s true, but what are you gloating about?

I love the good ole red blooded Muricans who take pride in drinking watered down garbage beer that was a hack attempt at plagiarizing a style of German beer using cheaper ingredients. The US brewing industry collapsed during prohibition. It then stayed depressed in the post-prohibition low ABV period. The domestic beer industry is finally seeing a return to glory and you tits want to continue drinking swill...
Oh look.......it’s that guy

I buy what I want or need, not sure about social advancement and shite.

I saw it in the South, never see it here.
But if it's not beer, it's something else. Everyone does it

I've come so full circle I can't wait to get on with the downsizing of the material and upsizing my view, land and giving my eventual grandchildren summers and winters they'll never forget.

Because our economy is held together by retail and it depends on everyone buying shite so that's the mindset many people have.

I've found that I don't care about stuff nearly as much as I did when I was younger. I'm making more money now than I ever have too.

I don't think you can lump all these people into one bundle.
You have people that use their money to do things like give their children good educations, live in nice neigbborhoods, travel, buy quality vehicles and clothing and maybe enjoy a little culture.
Then you have people who buy huge but ugly McMansions, drive unweildy big block SUV's, buy their kids a new i-phone every year from age 4 onward, and generally have to outdo every purchase their brother-in-law or cousin makes.

No bragging involved.. but for the record, with $90 Billion on hand, Warren Buffet stops on the way to his office every morning (driving his mid-sized Buick) at a McDonalds drive-through... to order his own breakfast...pays with the spare change his wife leaves out on his chest of drawers...

We put status symbols, club memberships, travel-ball titles, the dimensions of one-another's parents (really, only the mom is relevant) and sex-partners significant anatomy on a spreadsheet to measure other people's worth compared to our own.
It's way easier measure the superficial crap and come up with a silly heuristic than it is to sit down, have a conversation and actually get to know someone... because we are some lazy bastards.

I do things because I want to and I can.
The reason I run in the circles that I do isn’t because I am obsessed with their approval, it’s because they enjoy and can afford to do the same things my wife and I can.
I have plenty of friends that I’ve known for years but we don’t vacation etc together because we are in completely different income brackets.
Hating people who do, is a defense mechanism for those who can’t.

You can't take it with you. Why not enjoy the good life if you can?
Otherwise, isnt it a waste?
And isnt it a bit narrow minded to assume that someone who has a lot of shite does so because he's worried about what others think?
Ignorant and narrow minded.
Jealousy doesnt look good, baw

You know who I respect? The multi-millionaire who drives an old pickup and drinks Budweiser on his back porch while posting on tigerdroppings.

Because from an early age, every one of us have it drilled into our heads through every means known to man that possessions and advancement is what brings happiness. It has become over time, what we now refer to as “The American Way”.

Yep it's drilled into our heads early, everyone has their own reasons for staying in the rat race though.
The asset you can never make more of is time. I look at every possession now as costing money that will require me to work longer, that simple change in how I frame my thoughts has made it remarkably easy to not buy shite anymore. It's no longer "Do I want this" it's "Do I want to spend X more months / years working to have this" and the answer is almost always no.
I'm buying 10 acres in Texas and putting a small house on it and working part time once I'm 43 and there aren't many possessions that make me want to delay that.

Remember, even if you win the rat race--you're still a rat...
