Why are so many religious people full of hate?

Bottom line, they are scared they will go to hell so they don't like anyone who engages in activities they think will cause people to go to hell. Its actually pretty selfish.

The religious atheists are among the worst.

It's really not as many as you could think. Like in many things, it's just that the loudest and biggest assholes in a group get all of the attention.

And then there is the little thing about people loving bad news. A church could go out and donate $10 million to an orphanage and do 10,000 hours worth of volunteer labor and not a peep would come out. Let the pastor get caught banging a hooker and half the free world knows about it the next day.

By and large, your every day religious zealot (Christian specifically) that use it as the single thing they base their entire life on are of below average intelligence. Lower intelligence people are more easily convinced of things such as religion. Low level intelligence also has a way of making people fear others who are different. Fear of others who are different leads to hate and persecution.

The problem is people hiding behind religion rather than having a relationship with Christ. Matthew 7:14 says the road is narrow and only a few find it. The truth is that a large portion of people taking up space in Church pews have not truly experienced salvation.
