Fear of snakes is instinctive and is natural. Probably evolved the fear for a reason. Same thing with roaches.

I find roaches and mice to be disgusting but not scary.

I'd much rather accidentally step on a rodent like a mouse than a fricking snake.

Some of them are cold-blooded killers. Literally. One of the great things about living in Seattle is there are no venomous snakes west of the Cascades. Spiders, OTOH, are out of control, so pick your poison.

when i see a snake i'm compelled to move closer. maybe i'm a weak evolutionary link that needs to be eliminated. but my highly evolved dog does the same. i think we make a darwinistic codependent symbiotic pair. or we'll both die young and improve the gene pool we'll see.

In my life I've probably killed 150 snakes. And every one of those snakes had friends and family who loved them. I'm careful, I sleep with one eye open, I always take the table in the corner. But I know that day is coming. I'll be sitting in some cheesy diner with my family, listening to Journey while we wait for our onion rings when some snake slithers in wearing a Member's Only jacket.

Simply because of ignorance

This ^^^. Most of the fear is based on lack of knowledge, or misinformation. I've caught snakes since around age 5 or 6. Just about every non-winter day, the minute we got off the school bus we were headed to the woods or the canal. Made a dew bucks selling them as a kid, kept many as pets, etc. And in all that time, I've never seen a snake intentionally come towards me rather than try to get away. All I can is laugh at some of the stories I hear from people. My Green Tree Python, Jungle Jaguar Carpet Python, and Zebra Jungle Carpet Python are just stunningly beautiful works of nature. They are graceful in their movement and a joy to observe. And catching venomous snakes is a hell of an adrenaline rush - it's amazing how much they can contort their mouths trying to slip a fang on you while in your grasp. Fascinating creatures that really get a bum rap due to ignorance and irrational fear. However, I do have an understanding of irrational fear since I'll grab a snake but won't get within 10 feet of a roach - those bastards are the true spawn of Satan.

Ignorance can have a role to play in fear of non-venomous snakes, but you directly contradict the notion of the fear being irrational just in these two sentences.

I don't know but I live in dallas and I rarely see a snake much less a venomous snake. So I think here, and probably in most areas out side of gulf coast Areas, people don't See many snakes. If you don't see snakes on a regular basis they all look the same. This can be a lesson in race relations too. Not all snakes are bad......not all Hispanics or African black Americans.......when you live among them you realize this......copper heads are the most prevalent in dallas but people here think every snake in the water is a moccasin..........I will say, when I was young and lived down on the gulf coast snakes didn't bother me. Now that I am older and living in a place we don't see snakes, I get a little more rush when I do see one.

I was the kid that had snakes as pets growing up. I would still like the vast majority of them on fire.

I don't know why.

I feel like if they had legs, they wouldn't be as scary.

Are you kidding? That would be terrifying. Can you imagine a 5 foot long venomous snake with the ability to run after you and potentially climb up things to get to you? Or a fricking anaconda that could chase you through the jungle with its legs?

I'm not scared of snakes and can identify venomous from non-venomous better than most, but that is a world that would not be worth living in.

Although I've often joked about being afraid, I've really always had a fascination with them. As a kid, my brother and I would catch them and then put them in an aquarium or something and just observe them for hours. He was always way more comfortable with them though and damn near made a career for himself in the army by snake handling. I've always felt like, I'm not scared of them as long as I can see them....... But with that being said, probably at least 3 of my top 10 "oh shite" moments involved snakes. One of which a non venomous one, on an almost dark evening at peason ridge (fort polk). I went to go take a piss on a pine tree, and about 5 seconds into it, the fricking tree started turning in circles. I went from auto pilot to wide awake and realized I was pissing all over one of those speckled yellow king snakes that was about 8 feet long. I don't mind admitting that I not only pissed all over my leg, but I fell backwards down a hill about 10 feet. That's what fight or flight does to you when you're half asleep. Also in the back of my mind, I'm knowing I'm sitting here in the God Damn Cobra Kang snake capital of the world. Like literally, this is where the name came from because of the abundance of venomous snakes I'd ran across while working there.

I do believe we have an innate sense or fear of reptiles though. It could be an evolutionary/survival mechanism or maybe it even goes back to religion and some of the first bible stories we hear as kids. Either way, I have no problem understanding people's fear.

And since I love a good snake discussion, this was another one of those 3 in my top 10 moments.

It's bc they don't have legs and arms. Only big teeth and they are fast.

The worst would be an underwater snake if you were swimming.

From Genesis, after the serpent tricked eve into eating the fruit:

quote:

So the Lord God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.

One of the longest running cat and mouse games in the history of the universe. They try to nibble on our feet, we're supposed to stomp the shite out of em.

Yeah. That's moment 3. There's really not a more helpless feeling than realizing you are now in the water with a venomous snake, while you are swimming.

This may sound dumb, but I'd rather swim with a shark. I'd at least try to punch the shite out of his eyes and hope for the best. If that snake goes under and I can't see it, the wait for that ambush would seem endless.
