Why Are People Debating This Math Problem
Because people are dumb.

How can the answer be anything other than 1?
Exhibit A.
Written the way it's written the answer is always 16.

Right but you don't know if the 2(2+2) is the entire denominator or if it's just 2. It's intentionally deceiving just like the million other problems like it.

Current Order of Operations (PEMDOS) gives you 16 as the answer.

It would have to be written 8/(2(2+2)) if the 2(2+2) were the whole denominator.

Sure, if you make the assumption that 8/2 is by itself and the denominator isn't the whole 2(2+2)

Yes in a world where it isn't deliberately trying to rile message boards into a fury of arguments.

Like I always say in these threads, it's not deceiving to anyone that understands math. There is nothing subjective about the question in the OP. People are just dumb.

No assumption necessary to come up with 16.

I understand math just fine.
It's intentionally deceiving as to the totality of the denominator.

Yes it is. Just the same as an assumption is necessary to get 1
quote:
If it's
8
-
2(2+2)
It's 1.
If it's
(8/2) * (2+2)
It's 16.

Incorrect. You have to assume something that isn't there to get to 1.

It's deceiving because people are dumb.

You know the answer and you're arguing that it's the answer but it's also not.
In short, you're the only one arguing.

You have to assume it's 8 over 2 and not 8 over 2(2+2) to get 16. Jesus man this is retarded.

Order of Operation you dumb mother fricker. It’s 38.

That's what it is. You don't have to assume it, that's the way it's written.

Agree to disagree. These threads are fricking stupid everytime one of these problems comes out.

Considering how long a potential argument between the two of us could go, deal.
