Why are people advised against wearing masks in public to protect against Chinese virus?

I heard a lot of so called experts saying it's only required if you are a carrier of the virus, and wearing a mask will not protect you.
I don't believe that one bit. The virus can be transmitted by droplets and there are always droplets coming out of people's mouth.
I always wear my mask and gloves when I go anywhere outside my house.

A N95. Sure that will help...a lot. A regular fitting paper mask that leaves ample room for droplets to go in and out of...not so much. Those are actually much more beneficial in catching/restricting the droplets from the actual sick person as opposed to protecting a healthy person.

Just fricking stay home, if you have a stockpile of masks just donate it to a local facility and stay home without food or water, don’t come out.... ever

They realized that there initially was a shortage of masks, so they didn’t want to create a run on them.

Because you would touch your face more with your hands.

Your mask, singular?

Unless you’re disinfecting it, yeah, you’re probably better off with nothing.

I listened to a doctor from a NYC hospital mention wearing masks to train us not to touch our faces.

He says over 99 percent of the spread is hand to face contact. He says you can get it through the air if you are in tight quarters for 30 minutes with someone that is coughing, but he emphasized the hand to face being the overwhelming majority of cases.

Also this video will calm some nerves, and put it into perspective.

A properly fit N95, 99, or 100 will protect you. A surgical/procedure mask will not. With a properly fit N95 (or up) you will be breathing through the mask only. Any air that gets in was filtered by the mask. That is not the case with a surgical mask. You will be breathing around the mask primarily. If you have the virus and cough into a surgical mask your droplets will be caught by the mask with a small amount going out the sides.

Doctors swap out their masks frequently. Masks are effective for stopping transmission To others if you are infected. Masks are not effective for the general population as masks are ill fitting and people touch many things which could have the virus and then touch the mask. Then they reuse the possibly infected mask. That is what a doctor told me.
