Generational staying power. 50-60 years worth now, right? Lego knows kids want them, and parents believe it's an intellectually stimulating toy. So the market for them will always be really good.
Even second hand they sell really well if you have all the pieces and instructions. I need to do that with my kid's collection. The boy sets, at least. My 10 year old girl still builds with hers all the time.

Why are a pair of Nike Air Jordans so expensive? Why are name brand items more expensive than off brand items?

This is why I have saved all my legos for when my kid is old enough to enjoy them.
Yeah I was thinking about clearing out some old toys but kept all the LEGO sets. My oldest son loves them and I now have a baby boy so they will get used for years.

They shut down like every 8 months to completely retool and repair their equipment. Its pretty amazing. It is doneso to ensure that ever brick is interchangeable down to the very first set.
They want then to snap together like Legos do.
The equipment overha and downtime ain't cheap.
They have some great documentaries on them. I used to bitch at the prices also, but after watching them and being pretty amazed by the processes they go through I no longer bitch about them price wise. Then again I. Not buying the insane displays.
LEGO Voltron looks fricking amazing though.

Buy Minecraft instead. It's like an infinite LEGO set for $20-25.
And you can build electric circuits with redstone.

I’m sure the licensing from Disney and the Comic Book stuff cost as well.

Yes

ALWAYS have been expensive. For years and years it's been so.
I think they had to prefund the losses inherent in the short to medium term of opening stores and their initial forays into making movies.

The tolerances are insane on them. Every lego ever made can fit into any other lego ever made. Not to mention the licensing fees for Star Wars, etc.

They have quite a few licensings.
Star Wars
DC Comics
Ghostbusters
Harry Potter
Marvel
And that's just a few I remember seeing.. I wouldn't know, but I would imagine the sets they have licensings on would cost a little more than a classic set of the same amount of pieces.

they paid for all of those licenses, that shite ain't cheap.
they literally have a license for every popular toy, movie, show.

1 to pay all the costs associated with the licensing of DC, Marvel, Star Wars, Ninja Turtles, etc. etc.
2 is quality. Have you ever tried to build a KO lego set by Mega Blocks, Kreeo, Mega Construx, or one of the dollar store building sets? They are crap. There are several thousandths variance between what should be identical bricks. Legos are the exact same size and fit together perfectly.

I got my 14 yo, who is an 80s pop culture geek, this for Christmas. It is an amazing toy.

There are a bunch of Lego sets on sale at Wal Mart right now if you bring yourself to go into a Wal Mart.
Wal Mart also carries a similar line called Mega Construx which are pretty cool.
Not as many kits but they did just come out with He-Man figures and a wind raider.

Fun fact: the plural of LEGO is LEGO.
LEGOs is not a word.
Who gets to decide that stuff? It seems like legi would be better. But I don't have a doctorate in english from some fancy liberal arts college so I guess it don't matter what I think.
