Why are humans so easily fooled?

We fall for propaganda, fake news, advertising, religions, old remedies, magic, etc.

Most people just aren't very smart.

Because 85% minimum of the earth is fricking retarded and it's a miracle they don't die each day from sheer stupidity.

Granted, but there are lots of smart religious people.

Life is complicated and people feel lost. They grasp for anything that gives them hope.

People need approval and acceptance.

“But the Wall Street Journal said so!” “Who are they?” “I don’t know, that’s what they said!”

Well the fundamental basis most people live according to is a fictional book. Progress from there.

I am just a poor boy though my story's seldom told
I have squandered my resistance for a pocketful of mumbles, such are promises
All lies and jest, still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest, hmmmm

We start'em young with stories about Santa, the Easter Bunny, the tooth fairy, and god and the devil.

Who decides what is propoganda and what is fake? Who tells you what is real? Where do you go for the truth? What do they want you to know and what do they not want you to ever see? The problem with the internet and journalism is that we have entered a post-credibility world. So many major publications have revealed themselves to be nothing but paid shills and partisans. So much once thought to be nothing but paranoid conspiracy fodder has proven to be true and continues unabated. The internet was thought to make it easier to distinguish fact from fiction, find information, and communicate quickly, but now there is so much noise that it is impossible to verify anything. The gate keepers of information themselves have thrown their hats into the ring of tipping the scales of public opinion and crafting narratives rather than simply helping people to find the information they seek. In a world without credibility, without bedrock upon which to base our world views, all information is propoganda. All information is weaponized, and all of the means of finding that information has been appropriated to those ends as well.
We fall for propaganda because it is impossible to tell the propaganda apart from the rest of the tidal wave of noise we are inundated with daily. There is no line anymore. Maybe there never was one. We simply are forced to choose what propaganda we want to believe, because there are no objective sources anymore. There is no objective truth anymore. There is only what we choose to believe.

Lack of critical thinking
Tribal mentality
Insecurity
Craving external validation
Desire to belong
Tradeoffs of independence for perceived security.
The idea of the independent, free thinking individualist is dying. It's easier for people to follow than lead

Exactly, if you look in the web for info regarding the "induced neurosis" experiments that Pavlov did, you will realize that "they" are doing something very similar to us.

Modern humans fall for anything because we’re so distracted with bullshite. People don’t take the time to think, they just grab what satisfies their mind and go with it
