Why are Buddhist temples always so big and in the middle of nowhere?

To be far away from noise, distraction and temptation so they can focus on prayer and meditation.

Monks need to be isolated from society and its bullshite to progress in their connection with God and ascend to a higher plane of existence.

The most prominent Buddhist temple in Baton Rouge ( Tam Bao) is right off Florida Blvd. Remember monks and nuns live on site, so there are usually a separate residence for both, a dining hall, a separate kitchen, storage area, a garden for vegetables and fruit, the main temple, a columbarium, a study area, an area for children, a secondary area for small services like funerals, etc.

Don't know about that. There's one in Terrytown on Stumpf Blvd. that sticks out like a sore thumb.

There's one off Airline north of Gonzales. It's hard to see but sometimes in winter you can get a glimpse of the roof. I always thought they were partly hidden in order not to draw attention to themselves.

They broke off of Tam Bao in Baton Rouge a long time ago. It's just where they could get land at a good price and have some solitude. Buddhism is not secretive. If you walk in you are welcome. Of course in Louisiana Buddhists are almost always Vietnamese, so there is not a whole lot of other races there, and so mystery prevails because of the cultural/language barrier. But you can just walk in and talk to a monk or at least a learned novice any time you want. Tam Bao Friday meditation is open to anybody and a lot of non-Vietnames people go.

The largest temple in the NOLA area is south of Belle Chasse in the middle of nowhere.
