next year will focus on the Explorer II.
Do you have any guesses on how they change it? I have the black one, and I love the splash of orange color and size, but I don’t like the floating hands or the metal bezel.
I’ve been thinking of ditching it for the Submariner, but I’m on the fence. Maybe I hold out for new Explorer II...

Speculation is adding a ceramic bezel, which to my view is a mistake for this watch. Which I could see happening since they discontinued the black ceramic bezel GMT Master II 116710LN. Some would say each of these things has nothing to do with the other and could well be correct. The SS bezel certainly sets the Expl II apart. But, I'm more a fan of the SS bezel on the SS Daytonas vs the black ceramic on the current ones.

It's the one thing about it that drives me nuts--not the SS, but rather the combo of SS + etched-on numbers. It just looks unnatural to me for some reason--I'd be okay with one or the other (either SS + no etching, or ceramic + numbers)
If you're right and they actually did the ceramic and kept everything else, i'd be ecstatic. That would be my grail watch.

My dad gave me the Rolex my mom gave him for their first anniversary. They divorced when I was a few years old, but I lost my mom in 2008 so now it means a lot more to me. My dad gave it to me when I turned 30 in 04. Not a big watch guy either.
Oyster Perpetual.

Obtuse, do you know anything about the Undone brand.
Undone is a company started by a guy in Hong Kong named Michael Young. He has restored several Rolex bands for me and it is truly amazing what he can do.
He does work that Rolex is not willing to do. I ripped the solid end link off of a Rolex 16660 Seadweller band and Rolex said that it was not replaceable I would have to buy a new band. Michael fixed it and it looked and felt brand new when it was returned to me. He is a magician.
If you have a band with worn links he will fix the pins and weld up the edges of the links where they have been rubbing and it will be like new when you get it back.

That's a great piece...especially love the vintage ones. I dig the no date and simple baton hands and stick markers. I have a 114300 - 39 mm w/ white dial. Only thing I wish Rolex had added to that model is an easy link.

As BigPapi mentioned a ceramic bezel is the most obvious answer but everyone is just speculating.
Me personally I wish they would go the opposite way and stay with the steel bezel but change it to the 1655 aka Freccione or Steve McQueen bezel. However, Rolex rarely looks back and when they do it is usually a small detail like when they brought the orange arrow back to the EXP II.
Grand Seiko apparently likes the current Explorer 2 bezel as evidenced by the SBGN005

I love that GS GMT and have toyed with the idea of picking one up. I've gone back and forth between seriously looking for an Oyster Quartz, SBGN005G and not getting either at all (right now I'm on the neither).
The McQueen 1655 is a looker - of course he knew how to pick 'em...a birth year 5513 is on my list to own at some point in time as well.

Obtuse, do you know anything about the Undone brand. Basecamp model looks good for a low priced watch.
As mentioned this is the brand co-founded by Michael Young the Bracelet Magician, I think the other founder is named James. Michael is known for tightening up old clanky Rolex bracelets to better than new condition along with being one of the first to really master laser welding to fix gouges in cases.
I don't know a ton about Undone and have never held one. There are certainly better specced watches on paper for the price but they have solid movements and it is fair to buy totally on looks at the price point. Undone borrows heavily from prominent watch brands but doesn't usually copy complete watches but usually mixes them in. Compare the Basecamp you pictured to the seconds, minutes and 24 hour hand of the Rolex 1655 I posted above.
If you like one of their watches I say go for it. It is cool how you can customize them. If it were me buying a Basecamp I would get the blue degrade' dial with the sterile bezel (I think the progression from blue in the center of the watch to black outside is interesting) with the black date window.
From what I have read on the forums the ones that own them seem to like them.
They market with a very interesting balance while they seek out ink from the more traditional watch media they also advertise in a very fashion watch orientation with GQesque look book pictures.
If you like the look from all accounts there is a decent watch under there with what appears good customer service. As for servicing the movement when it comes time it would be much cheaper to source a new Seiko NH35 (easy and cheap) and have a watchmaker switch them out or do it yourself if you already have the skills or are semi-adventurous.

I don't understand the appeal of high dollar jewelry watches.
Wearing them to a business meeting with me gives me a bad first impression that I try to get past. Wearers of flashy watches mean "grab your wallet" and "watch out" in business deals with the person wearing one in my old, backwoods mind.
Same for gold chains.
I’m not sure these are comparable. Who the frick wears a gold chain anymore?!?

Damn, that looks legit. Is that raised? For some reason, it looks better than mine, but I can’t put my finger on why...

Rubber B or Everest. I prefer Everest because they are softer but yet thicker and they seem to more quickly sit the watch correctly on your wrist. Neither is cheap but the fit to the watch case is excellent in both.

Probably just the picture the numbers on the 1655 bezel are engraved and painted. It is easy to see on pictures of ones with significant wear where the paint is missing from a number or two.
I love the 1655 but with the prices topping $20K for a good example they aren't "cheap" like they used to be.
