I love NOLA and have been there a couple times for NYE. But in my experience, unless you like being in such large crowds that you cannot move freely, then its best to avoid Bourbon St after about 10:00 pm.

1) Are you a valet?
2) Do you have car like the one you are driving around in.
If the answer to either is no, then it's probably not an "accident" but rather a decision based on "over-prescribed" substances.

In his defense, he does run a private transportation service where we live, so it actually is his MO. Hard to mistake a Maxima for a Sprinter, though.
