Elgin is kind of a sh*thole but there are a lot of nice areas around it or within a few train stops. I would look at St. Charles

Your input is much appreciated.

Batavia, St. Charles are both nice. You won't be near the city

Ah, Elgin is just outside my wheelhouse. I am not particularly familiar with the area and have really only driven past it going west on I-90.

I think Elgin itself would be good. St Charles is close by and would also be a good choice.

I'm guessing you want to live in the burbs, as Elgin is actually an outer suburb. 36 miles from Union Station which is in the West Loop downtown.

Myself I'd be looking at some of the small towns west of Elgin. Just depends on what one is looking for.

For the watch comment;

Recall seeing a picture of a large watch factory in downtown Elgin back in the day.

that Metra Northwest line drops you in the parking lot for Arlington Park, and you can drink on the train. Great way to spend a Saturday.

Arlington Park being a horse track. They will sometimes have 25 cent beers during the week and i've spent many of times drinking way too many beers and only spending $4. I lost a shite ton on the horses but only spent $4 on booze.

I have family that lives in Belmont Terrace, near the Indian Boundary Golf Course. 30 minutes NW of the city. Visit once a year to eat good groceries and attend a sporting event or concert. Love Chicago but couldn't live there due to the insanely cold winters. My relatives share the same about Louisiana and our brutal heat & humidity.

Best of luck wherever you move

I wouldn't have to deal with Chicago itself on a daily basis.

Outside of the traffic, Chicago is awesome. Outside a few of them, the suburbs are what's nondescript and boring.

St. Charles is west, and way the hell out there...basically a 4th ring suburb.

The best suburbs closest to Elgin would be Arlington Heights, Schaumburg, Inverness, Hoffman Estates. You really can't go wrong with any of them as long as the suburbs is what you are looking for.

I really like the chain of lakes too, algonquin / crystal lake would be the closest to elgin. My grandpa lives in Mchenry on the lake its great.

Only been there once, but St. Charles has a nice little downtown.

I think cities like that have fared better, as they were too far out of town to begin their life as a suburb. So they have some character and history. The burbs grew into them.

And since you are already working in the burbs, no reason to give yourself a hellacious commute.
