It's hilarious how women can be. If we don't make them happy, we must be mentally ill.

Whether it's not cleaning the house or fricking other bitches. You're bipolar, you're manic, your depressed.

It's called "we like to frick bitches but not do what they tell us."

Same for my marriage. We were together 13 years. I tried for years to get him adequate treatment, but he wouldn't cooperate. Leaving was the hardest thing I've ever done, but it was going to drown me, too.

This might seem like a great suggestion to you, but giving advice like this to someone who suffers from a mental illness or disorder is probably not helpful. You're talking to someone who has anxiety/panic disorder and depressive disorder. Simply going out and traveling is probably not going to solve those problems. In fact, traveling might trigger anxiety and panic, and ultimately exacerbate their problems. By telling someone how to fix their problems, you can make it seem to them that you're trivializing their problems, or that you think it's their fault they haven't figured out how to solve them yet.

If you want to support someone who suffers from mental disorders, offer sympathy and a friendly ear if they want to talk about their issues. Leave the treatment and counseling to professionals.

Sources that have information about how to support someone who has mental health issues:

Do antidepressants really help? What does it feel like when they work? I kinda have a theory that if antidepressants worked, people would be taking them recreationally.

Lighten up, it's not like I said jump off a bridge or snort some blow. Hate to hear someone say something like that or feel that way.

BTW, I can tell you're dug in with lots of ammo on this topic. Good luck with what you're going through.

I have no idea what it feels like because I've never taken them, but I don't think they are much use recreationally. I'm told that they don't really make you feel "high" and sometimes they have a numbing effect on your emotions. But maybe I should leave this to someone who has experience with them.

I'm sure you meant well and I'm sure there was no harm done, but I think it's important to help people understand how to support people who suffer from mental health issues. Our natural inclination is to try to solve the problem for them, but that often ends up being counterproductive.

I hope people take a look at the links I posted because they're very helpful in general, not just when dealing with people who have a mental illness/disorder.

I've put a lot of effort into learning more about mental disorders since my marriage fell apart. I knew my wife was having serious issues with depression/anxiety but I didn't appreciate how serious the consequences were for our relationship until it was too late. And since going to therapy I've understood my own issues and also learned how being close to my wife's issues affected me.

We never learned how to communicate in an effective and healthy way about what she was dealing with so yeah it's an important issue for me.

Not necessarily diagnosed but been treated for PTSD and anxiety. It sucks and is embarrassing. But try and trust in God and push through.

I didn't like them at all.

They made me feel like a different person and they definitely altered my personality. It's hard to describe, how they make you feel, but they essentially make you someone else completely, or they did in my case.

Good question. In my case I think that they've helped to stabilize me, as I said in the OP. I'm still depressed. They haven't fixed that.

Prozac - stabilized (current)
Effexor - horrible side effects
Zoloft - did nothing
Lexapro - did nothing more than Prozac
Wellbutrin - GAVE me panic attacks
Paxil - killed my sex life, couldn't finish
Celexa - did nothing

could be forgetting some. It's been a long time.

It is extremely important. My ex was bipolar (said she was a "high functioning bipolar") and it was sometimes like living in Bazarro land. And lots of times (in the beginning) what I would try and do to help would often be the worst thing I could have done. Read a lot about it and talked to specialists, but it was a lot of work to even be able to try and help. Eventually, the crazy was just too much and we had to split.

Agree with you 100% on these. The only problem i probably had is I did not take them long enough.

I have always found that if I keep myself busy inside and outside of work I dont focus on the issues that are going on . It helps me stay focused and not dwelling on the fact that Im depressed. In my opinion meds dont help worth a shite, but dealing with depression/anxiety for so long now makes me think I need to try another one in order to help fix the problem (Meds are not the end all be all cure for it in any way, but they can be a shoulder to lean on)

I've been married for twenty years and my wife's been a trooper through all my shite. It's caused problems, but nothing that we haven't been able to overcome. She's very outgoing and always wants to do things and go places. I don't want to do anything. I'll give in and go out to eat or to the movies, but it's only to make her happy.
