I played and loved high school baseball and basketball but I was not a “jock”, graduated as valedictorian but was not a “geek”, did not overly participate in high school clubs because it interfered with sports and hunting/ fishing, and was very shy and reserved concerning the opposite sex. But many of my “friends” were neighborhood girls who came to my house for tutoring on math, physics, and chemistry; finally, my first girl friend in high school was very cute but we could not date unless her sister or brother were present. I later found another cute girl at LSU that I could date independently, and 48 years later we are still married.

Ding, you win. Stories like that aren't gonna happen often now.
Congrats to both of you!

I don't have a clue who she is. I don't remember half the people anymore.

Meh. Labels are really something more from pop culture. My HS group were the nerdy kids, who smoked weed and who were social enough to be invited to the good parties. Very rarely would I find someone to be just a “jock”’or a “metal head”.

There.

Interacted fine with all groups/cliques, but wasn't really a member of any.

Pretty much this for me but was part of the jocks. I believe most of us in my high school were the same whether we hung around in a clique for brief periods of the day. We had PYC (private youth club) parties after home games every Friday night during football season, so everyone hung out together.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that, mostly shy. Was friendly with everyone from outcast Glenn Danzig to preppy Bryan Adams' types, went to clique parties, but never once hung with the dudes that cut their hair like penis heads, wore Mercedes symbols around their necks, and argued about someone's 10's hitting harder than someone's 12's and all that implies. Yep that cost me from getting laid, but so be it.

You were probably better off not sleeping with those dudes anyway.

I think most schools have the cool/edgy nerd group (usually a lot of jocks in here) and the more reserved/lame nerd group (teachers kids and the cooler band geeks) that all take the same classes and get along at school but have wildly different social lives. I was in the latter.

I was definitely an a-hole, not 10% as smart or as cultured as I thought I was. Paralyzed with fear around most girls. Really didn't help that my parents were dirt poor and I didn't live in the community - only got enrolled when my mom starred teaching there. And my parents were very controlling, so my social life was basically zero until I got a girlfriend as a Senior.
